Recently diagnosed so still learning. I had an almost identical dinner this evening: meatballs in passata with cauliflower rice, broccoli & and few peas. Also had cabbage last time. First time I had this my reading 2hrs post food was +2.5, this evening it was just +0.5. Any ideas why? Thanks all.

The annoying thing about T2 diabetes is although the vast majority is about what we eat, other factors come into it too, like whether or not we excerised (not necessarily vigorous exercise, just moving around even), whether we are stressed, have slept well, the weather (literally), for females mainly, hormones and close enough to the colour of our socks.

I’m guessing maybe your portion size was a little bit different, or you had fewer peas or passata. Those elements are the carrier bits.

in some ways, you demonstrate why testing a meal, or foodstuff at least a couple of times can be helpful.

If I read that right, the later meal barely moved you from the pre meal test result.

Marvelous stuff.

I think @AndBreathe covers it nicely above , and makes a great point of just why we test.

I can hear the music now ...
"Good evening cornylady, You have chosen as your specialist subject 'YOU' from DX in Jan 24' to current day.

Are you ready ?

Yes Magnus "

Maybe your new diet regime might have meant you eating less/better that day and thus a less muddied Glucose stream to fish in for the post meal result...mmmh

Or could be just the colour of your socks.

More of the same vein is the plan.

The blips & odd results are of interest but it's the trend you're really looking to spot & keep an eye on

And yours seems to be moving nicely in the right direction

Well done.

Unfortunately I can't exercise due to severe arthritis in both knees so having to do this with diet alone. My numbers are slowly improving although FBG isn't always wonderful (anywhere between 5.4 and 7.0) but general trend is down I think. So basically it's a ‍♀️ and just log what happens in the future for a better "average"?

There’s a saying, …. “You can’t outrun a bad diet”. I’d say it’s true.

exercise can add the metaphoric cream to the cake, but for T2s it really isn’t the cake. What we put in our mouths is by far the biggest factor.

I queried this with my consultant a few years ago (btw I've had it for 64 yrs). He said there are 11 things involved, you only have control of two , and you will never get the same result twice counting carbs. All you can hope for is a trend.

Thank you @golden oldie that is actually really useful to know and helpful for me to understand I can’t control everything (important as a massive control freak). Was actually wondering if I had done something wrong. So I shall take an average and say it’s ok

Oo - did he list the other nine things?
My partner says I eat too much cheese, I'm always stressed out, I exercise intensely but irregularly before meals, and I don't drink enough water so there's four!
We have Asian fried chicken, spinach and edamame every week and my BG has risen +0.5 this week and +3.5 last week. Go figure!

Trends over time is the significant variable when testing around mealtimes.
You can never get an exact result, but taking an average over a month of the same food, portion size, plate size, how you cooked it and so on. Too many variables. To base anything on one reading is not the whole story of what is going on. And then add on the variation from the CGM or glucometer.
If the trend is going towards normal blood glucose levels (4-6mmols) or even to be in single figures if you have been high. That is what you want to see. And avoids the high spikes is so important in getting lower BG readings.
