Sugar Levels In mg/dl Or mmol/l

In some countries sugar levels are tested in mg/dl and in some mmol/l.

I belong in the former category.

Recently my friend sent me the Bayer Breeze 2 glucometer as a Christmas present. Its one of the best in the world and very user friendly with no tests strips to fumble with. The strips are fed into the meter 10 at a time and you change the strips only after the 10 tests are completed.

However there was one problem. The meter showed results in mmol/l which I was not used to. Here is the conversion table from mg/dl to mmol/l and vice versa

mg/dl => mmol/l mmol/l => mg/dl
40 ~ 2.2 2.0 ~ 36
45 ~ 2.5 2.5 ~ 45
50 ~ 2.8 3.0 ~ 54
55 ~ 3.1 3.5 ~ 63
60 ~ 3.3 4.0 ~ 72
65 ~ 3.6 4.5 ~ 81
70 ~ 3.9 5.0 ~ 90
75 ~ 4.2 5.5 ~ 99
80 ~ 4.4 6.0 ~ 108
85 ~ 4.7 6.5 ~ 117
90 ~ 5.0 7.0 ~ 126
95 ~ 5.3 7.5 ~ 135
100 ~ 5.6 8.0 ~ 144
110 ~ 6.2 8.5 ~ 153
120 ~ 6.7 9.0 ~ 162
130 ~ 7.2 9.5 ~ 171
140 ~ 7.8 10.0 ~ 180
150 ~ 8.3 10.5 ~ 189
160 ~ 8.9 11.0 ~ 198

200 ~ 11.1 13.0 ~ 234
220 ~ 12.2 13.5 ~ 243
240 ~ 13.3 14.0 ~ 252
260 ~ 14.4 14.5 ~ 261
280 ~ 15.5 15.0 ~ 270

360 ~ 20.0 19.0 ~ 342
380 ~ 21.1 20.0 ~ 360
400 ~ 22.2 21.0 ~ 378
420 ~ 23.3 22.0 ~ 396
440 ~ 24.4 23.0 ~ 414
460 ~ 25.5 24.0 ~ 432

Calculate mg/dl x 0.0555 = mmol/l Calculate mmol/l x 18.018 = mg/dl

Yep, it appears that Bayer, in a heroic attempt to make a user-friendly product, locked the BG units. It says so in this PDF manual (page 17; copy+paste is also disabled).
They recommend calling customer service on 800 348 8100

It isn't Bayer, it's an EU regulation, I have one older meter that I can change. The regs. came in about 6 years ago when apparently there were reports of people changing the units, not realising what they had done and acting on those results.

I use a UK meter in mmol/l and input the results into a pump in mg/dl. You get used to it.

My big problem is in remembering the differences when discussing results with doctors and nurses. They are used to dealing with one unit. Here in France, the problem is compounded because they use g/l. ( rather than the mg/dl used elsewhere)
That can confuse things, I am apt to forget and say something like I had a reading of say 4; 4 here would mean 4g/l so very high rather than on the low side of normal.( 4g/l = 400mg/dl= 22mmol/l ). Leads to some odd looks and complicated explanations

Me thinks that they should have gone for both the units at the press of a button. Couldn't have been very difficult to multiply the mmol/l reading by 18.018

i just divide or multyply by 18 .108 div by 18 = 6 , 6 multiplied by 18 = 108
