Some people find that their levels can lower as little with red wine, or at least levels don't increase; doesn't work with me..a glass of red can cause a slight spike for me. Fortunately, I find that a bottle of nice quality beer with dinner is fine (no real impact on my numbers a hour or more later). Whisky - clearly made by gods, will often reduce my blood sugar for a wee while and is a good thing to have to combat a spike...sometimes. Basically, the liver copes with alcohol as a priority..which delays its dealing with glucose levels etc..hence a temporary drop in blood sugar. Evidently the best kind of alcohol in this regard in whisky, vodka and these kinds of spirit. That said, bear in mind that a whiskey poured at home is usually waaaay more than a unit - well, it is when I am pouring.
