Hi

Excellent to have this for Pre-diabetes as im still learning about it all

Found another diabetes website called diabetes.org.uk. Has some interesting reading on Pre-diabetes, also found a section on receipes and food, thinking that this would have some good low carb ideas, boy i was wrong, seemed like normal food for non diabetic's.....so i wont be bothering with that site again...

Low carb all the way!! :D
(with a treat now and then)

Hi Angela, welcome to the pre-diabetes part of the forum :)

Can I ask how useful your health team have been in New Zealand since your diagnosis of prediabetes? It would be interesting to see how it compares with treatment here in the UK.

Morning

Basically i had a couple of nasy infections, was tired, and extremly overweight, went to my doctor who sent me for a GTT, couldnt even have the test because my blood sugars were at 11 on the morning of my test (nurse took a few finger prick tests before i had a blood test), she advised me that 11 was to high to have a GTT and so i had a fasting blood test done, the nurse rang me the next day and i made an appointment to see my doctor and she told me that i was type 2 diabetic, explained what type 2 was, didnt really go into the food side of it, i asked for a meter was told i dont need to test and was sent away - head spinning! saw a dietitian who was telling me to eat porridge and furit with yoghurt for breakfast and a jacket potato filled with baked beans for lunch - little did i know that all is to much carb for me! - i saw another nurse who was going to check my feet and blood pressure and managed to get a script for a meter and some stips from her - having that meter was a life saver! now i knew what i could and couldnt eat....but my numbers were never that high - even if i ate macdonals for lunch - full combo, still got readings of under 7.
anyway - joined a gym, ate low carb - lost 45 kg. Finally i got to have my GTT, months and months later, it came back as prediabetic not full diabetic - i have learnt about pre diabetes and type 2 myself - i searched the internet and found this great site - without this site i would still be eating what my dietitian was telling me to eat - to me that is to much carb! im pretty much on my own - im not allowed anymore test strips because im not "diabetic" but i still live as though i am.....i have a GTT once a year.

This is really interesting as I think I may have pre diabetes.

Like you I had not felt well for several weeks and was very tired and I'm also very overweight. My blood pressure was taken initially with a reading of 177/90. I then had a fasting blood test that came back at 7.7. I then had another fasting blood test 4wks after the first one and that came back at 6.3.

BUT, prior to having the 2nd blood test I made some drastic changes to my diet - cut out/reduced salt, went low fat, low ish carb and also starting eat lots more fruit, veg, lean white meat and wholegrain products.

I was told the specialist diabetic nurse needed to see me (when I phoned for my 2nd lot of results). However, when I spoke to her on the phone she said she didn't need to see me as I wasn't diabetic!

Now, I'm led to believe that a reading of 6.3 when fasting for 12hrs could indicate pre diabetes? :?:

I'm still not sure how much the change in diet contributed to the lower reading so intend to make another appointment with the Dr as I'm still worried and also about the high blood pressure.

I'm still on the diet and treating myself as a potential diabetic!!!

Hi Tigerlily

Your story is very much like my own - my fasting Blood sugars have been about the 6 mark, and i have had two, its the Glucose Tolerence test is the only way i found out about the pre diabetes....im not sure about your numbers, are you going to have a Glucose Tolerence Test??

They didn't do the oral glucose tolerance test. This is because I find needles/injections and blood tests very stressful & traumatic :( so they said they'd only do the fasting blood test.

I think I'd like a 2nd opinion personally .....

The nurse did say I'd have to have an annual blood test and she also mentioned that I was glucose intolerant although how they worked that out I'm not sure! :?

Not really knowing what's going on inside my Endocrine system!!!
Hi Hevab

you're not pre-diabetic as your A1c is over 7 so you're technically a full Diabetic.

Pre-Diabetic A1c is 6-7, however usually this is a pre-cursor to full Diabetes but it can be managed for a period of time.

Diabetics will need some medication at some point to help.

I was diagnosed 'pre-diabetes a year ago, a few months after I turned 33. It was a shock and I was upset too as many people are. But then I got an official diagnosis 2 months ago with a slow Type 1 Diabetes so I need to take insulin. I'm very happy now because I feel better and you feel start to feel better in time as well. This forum is very good to meet supportive and friendly people who really understandd you.

Any type of Diabetes can affect anyone at practically any age. There are lots of people all of different ages here with lots of information and personal experiences.

As long as you control your carb intake as well as the type of carbs, do some exercise (I noticed on your other post you have an exercise bike  and take the Metaformin, this should all help.

Diabetes is a manageable condition but don't force yourself to change everything at one time it's a lot of stress then.

You're in charge :D

Hope you can get a glucose meter and strips to test 2.5hrs after your meals or else you won't know how much things are changing.
