I am at my whits end for about 4 weeks I have had all these symptoms bloating, cramps, wind and water swishing about in my stomach. I have been worrying sick. Yesterday went the Dr who said I need blood tests to check everything in the meantime she wasn't going to give me anything so I asked she gave me buscopan, which has helped a little but I am wondering if it could be the Metformin , which I take twice a day and have done since I was diagnosed type 2 around October 15, has anyone else had this ? any answer much appreciated and thanks in advance.

Metformin is well known for causing stomach upsets - some people have problems immediately; others develop them over time. Might be worthwhile changing to an extended release version to see if that helps.

Thanks I will talk to my Dr again today .

my Dr has changed me over to Metabet SR once a day but I was on 2 metformin a day now I am worried if I will get any withdrawal symptoms because my routine was eat breakfast and take the metformin and then tea time eat ea and take the 2 nd now what do I do take in morning or tea time and do I still eat at the regular times?

It worth watching your carbohydrate consumption too, as too many carbs in combination with metformin can cause similar symptoms. But it's definitely worth asking to be changed to the ST version.

Robbity

I have been on the SR version for the last 2 years and have never encountered any problems, but I was advised to build up to 4 a day very slowly, i.e starting at one a day for the first week, and when it was known that I could tolerate one, increasing to two on the second week etc. I was closely monitored by my GP and also the pharmacist each time I collected my prescription.

I agree with @Robbity though that Metformin and carbs are not good bedfellows. I very low carb and have had no ill effects ever

I started the Sr last night this morning I'm feeling very sick don't feel like eating but have forced myself to have a few spoons of porridge and a cup of tea.I have taken 2 buscopan hope this sickly feeling goes soon. thanks all for your responses.

Well porridge is a carb so there could be a connection with how you are feeling. Good luck and take the increase in doses very slowly, while restricting carbs if you can

Slow release you take in the evening with your meal. The one tablet is probably the same strength as the two that have been withdrawn.

Would Metformin make me ill like this for a month I feel terrible constantly feeling sick I could't eat ths morning I felt so sick. I have had all these symptoms for a months bloating , cramping and feeling sick, the Buscopan is helping but I shouldn't have to take that 4 times a day, any advice much appreciated feeling really depressed over this ...

What's your diet like?
Have you changed to LCHF, and increased dairy?
Dairy intolerance can be a problem.

I was going Tomas's about dairy as well. Another poster, Samantha, was having the same issues and stopped all dairy except butter I believe and all the bloating and cramping went away and she lost an inch on her waist in 3 days. Dairy causes all kinds of noises for me

Yep @Kristin251. It was me I stopped all dairy except butter. Thanks to you guys i was able to identify dairy was responsible for my bloating and cramps! I too take Metformin x2 daily but it was the dairy causing all the issues. Still taking Metformin but no bloating or cramps....feeling fantastic now.

awake again feeling sick more buscopan I eat yogurt and milk in tea that's all the dairy I have I feel like crying feel like going the hospital the SR Metformin is no different unless it takes more time..

Yogurt and dairy are one of the two worst for me me.

Nurse Dee so glad you are better. I hate bloating and even though I may occasionally have a taste of cheese the stomach rocks and rolls. You must be happy about the inches too!

To be up front, I don't take metformin, but I know my dad has problems with it.

But in case you're not having a reaction to that, I can offer some advice re generic stomach problems because I've had IBS my whole life an you are describing the symptoms I get when I eat anything with oats in it. I'm incredibly sensitive to oats and even one small Hobnob makes me feel awful.

In addition, you can get into a horrible cycle of worrying about feeling ill, which makes you tense up and causes the illness feelings. Honestly, I had no idea about this until I started a specific relaxation routine that involved holding my breath and releasing it and realising that mimicked my feelings of nausea and bloating.

I'm not saying I have the answer here, but it can be surprising what other people can tolerate you may not be able to, especially as you have a new medication in your system.

See if your GP will give you a course of proton pump inhibitors (e.g. lansoprazole) as that may help too.

Thanks Helse , I have Lansozoprazole just wondering why feel like this now I been on the Metforming about 6 months and was fine now I been like this a month can it just flare up like this?

Not normally.
Have you changed anything recently?

Within the limits of IBS (not really qualified to speak about anything else!) I have found that changing brands of processed foods can make a difference, especially with bread. But I'm not diagnosing IBS here as it does sound like something you should really go back to your GP with I have to say.

as far as I can remember the only thing I did change was tablets for Arthritis because the usual ones stopped working so the Dr prescribed different ones.
