Type 2 How often and when to test and evening snack

If you're not keen on cheese but love eggs, you could keep some hard-boiled ones aside for snacking. Nice with a few slices of chorizo.

Almonds are my thing.
 
Oh I wish I wasn't a snacker! It's always been a downfall of mine and it's doubly so now so it's something I'm working hard to overcome. I was a chocolate addict, yup, addict isn't too strong a word, I'd literally have a panic attack if we'd ran out and send hubs out to 24 hour supermarket of an evening and I'm on day 10 of not having any, and no crisps, which I'd also eat almost daily. It's shocking, I know, but I'd forego a meal for a bar of chocolate before! I'm doing much better last couple of days and not constantly thinking of it lol. Onwards and upwards as they say!

You don't have to give up chocolate altogether. There are several brands of very high cocoa chocolates on the market, available in supermarkets. These are low carb/low sugar and a couple of squares are fine. I personally don't like dark chocolate, but many folk here on the forum swear by these high cocoa bars.
 
I was diagnosed three weeks ago, but am a long time low carber. I used Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution, and suspect that it kept me prediabetec rather than full blown type 2 for decades.
So you have enough food, low density is the key - I avoid grains, starchy vegetables and legumes other than green beans and peas - but even peas taste so sweet. I have a meter and found that forbidden foods really are not good for me. I was seeing my numbers drop day by day, and then they went up and stayed up and I can only confess mia culpa, and go back to being careful. I did buy and make up some sugar free jelly - always a good thing to have on hand for those moments when temptation strikes.

I just had some sugar free jelly delivered in my asda order today! This is all new to me, diabetes and the low carb diet, but I am feeling far more positive after finding this site!

I do like nuts but not almonds, they always remind me of marzipan and I've always hated marzipan. I'll hard boil some eggs tom and keep them in fridge, for 'just in case', thank you.

I'm just scared that if I start I won't stop! Might have to try it when hubs is around so he can put it up high where I can't reach lol!
 
No worries we all have to learn.
One trick I found early on was to look at the back of the packets. if the product contains more than 5g of carbohydrate per 100g it went straight back on the shelf. Other people limit theirs to 10g of carbs.. you need to test and see which is better for you but to get your sugars down fast then 5g is better.
The exception to this was Oppo ice cream which has about 8 g of carbs per 100ml but that was a special treat which I have now ditched.

I nearly had a heart attack when I looked at the back of my cream cracker packet! There was 5.4g of carbs in ONE cracker! Obviously went straight in the bin!
 
You may not need to enlist your husband's help. The good thing about LCHF is that after a while you don't feel the need to snack so often. The other good thing about the 85%+ high cocoa content bars is that two squares is usually enough. You could always supplement your squares with a handful of any nuts you like.

I'll maybe leave it for a wee while before facing temptation of chocolate. I'll stick to a few nuts and sugar free jelly and possibly a few raspberries every now and then

I have to admit I can't quite face eating first thing, black coffee for me lol, it's usually at least an hour n half before I have anything, is that ok? I saw on the dietdoctor low carb site that they say it's ok to forego breakfast? Is that ok for diabetics?
I haven't eaten breakfast since the day after I was diagnosed. It's a great way to introduce fasting I just have lunch and dinner on my eating days.
 
I stopped eating breakfast at the end of October. I just have a necessary cup of tea, followed by another one mid morning. I expected to be hungry at lunch time, which is about 4 to 5 hours after getting up, but I'm not. I don't need to lose weight, I just wanted to decrease my base line levels a wee bit. Nothing changed for a week or so, but then it did. My base line (pre-meal, bedtime and fasting) levels have dropped across the board. I only eat in a 6 hour window now. It's called an 18/6 diet.

That's ok to do? You don't get low?

Not sure what you mean. I don't take any meds so as far as I am aware I can't hypo. My lowest ever BG reading has been 3.5 after 4 days of not eating. I was very pleased with that by the way.

This does sound interesting and something I will try. Eating first thing in the morning is just something I have never been able to do. Trying to follow my Doctors advice re a healthy diet, so eating breakfast, was just such an uphill battle.

I am up at 4am, out the door at 5am and starting work at 6am, and I am on the go constantly until I finish at 12.30pm. Ironically I work in a Bakery, but we are busy busy, so there is no time to eat anyhow.

18/6 diet sounds like just what I need.

Aaah the one thing nurse told me to watch out for was hypos, I guess the metaformin can cause that, my BG has been not bad last few days (since I got my new toy aka meter lol, but it was quite low a couple of times under 4

It is possible to hypo on Metformin, BUT HIGHLY unlikely, so very little to worry about. Your liver will take care of you.

Thanks goodness, that was the one thing she nearly had me running for the hills scared! Quick question, if my bg is 3.9 just as I'm going to bed is that ok?
