Ice cream

my husband has just bought me a tub of Frank's diabetic ice cream ( bless him) I am LCHF and articles on the net say this icecream is worse for diabetics than ordinary. Is this true and what would you suggest as an alternative ?

" diabetic" foods are usually loaded with junk and artificial sweeteners. I never eat diabetic food or ice cream but if I did I would get the creamiest fattiest one I could find and eat very little at one time.

Someone on the forum mentioned an ice-cream called Oppo which is supposed to be low in carbs.

I am type 2, no medication. I find I can manage a tub (not a cone) of proper dairy ice cream (as opposed to Mr. Whippy types) without spiking too much, especially if it comes with a dollop of Devon cream.

Even the NHS advises against diabetic products because of the junk they contain, and the sweeteners that can give you bowel problems,

Looked it up on t'Internet and found an old thread from another forum:
https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/franks-diabetic-ice-cream.9748/
It wasn't really in favour as it has more carbohydrates than average ice cream.

Not sure about the post which said

"Franks Ice Cream is the worse than regular Ice Cream. Instead of regular Sugar(Sucrose), it is full of worse sugars - Fructose, Maltodextrin, Dextrose. All of them actually cause type 2 Diabetes. no wonder the carbohydrate content of the so called "Diabetic" Ice cream is high.
Fructose, Maltodextrin, Dextrose are chemically processed 'filler' sugars which have a very high Glycemic Index."

However small portions of the (non-diabetic) expensive stuff with extra cream in might be O.K.
I need to look at a few tubs just to check them out.

Why not make your own, its not difficult. Eggs, cream, full fat milk and the same 'sweetener' you use for baking. The biggest problem is getting enough space in the freezer and planning ahead to ensure my ice cream maker is properly frozen.

Agree. I have just tried to make some ice cream but obviously hadn't left the bowl in the freezer for long enough. Am now attempting to turn it into mousse!

As @noblehead said, Oppo is a good and tasty option. I think the vanilla flavour has approx. 7.5g carbs / 100g. They also do a salted caramel and choc mint option which are higher but still low for ice cream. Available in Waitrose if @KevinPotts hasn't cleared out the entire supply;)

All gone.... Haha.... We still have 7 tubs in the freezer:)

Hello. I just wondered if anybody had found that Franks diabetic icecream had a laxative effect? Thank you

I don't think many people here would eat it anyway. I have been having a battle with Waitrose as I thought anything labelled "Diabetic" was now banned.. they seem to be down to their last tub in my local store and have started stocking Oppo so that's where my pennies are going...

@bulkbiker I have eaten some of the Franks icecream which was why I was asking. I agree that Oppo is much better, particularly the salted caramel flavour, however Holland and Barrett are charging £5.99 for the rather small tub which I find quite expensive

@bulkbiker I have the same problem with my local Waitrose, they seem to have some fairly antique franks and no Oppo. That said, it is so long since I last ate ice cream I doubt I will. I much prefer Double thick jersey cream, put in the freezer the night before

Have you checked recently.. they have just started stocking it in my local for about the past month maybe less.. before that I had to go to Hove for it. I think Oppo did publicise that more Waitrose branches were having it. It was all sold out at my local recently due to the £3.74 per tub offer..

Oppo ice cream.is delicious. And relatively low carb. It is my Friday night treat. Unfortunately my nearest Waitrose doesn't stock it so I have to trek to the other side if town from my office to get it. It's on special offer this week so have bought 3 tubs.
