Hi my name is Alana.. Im here for some advice and (real advise) about diabetes.. My dad has been told he is 1% off being diabetic, Doctor has given him no information about how to prevent it becoming worse, or getting it..So any advice would be hepful.. :) Alittle bit to go with this, my dad is slightly over weight, not massivly, but is walking every day to excersice, He LOVES sugar and sweets badly. all he knows is he is to stop sugar, but is finding it hard on his mood and things to cut out all sugar, so was wondering any diet tips to stop it progresing etC? if u can have sugar, and if all ? Seems weird i know, but im just trying to find infromation.

Hi, Welcome :)

This is the best time to do this before its too late, he needs to stop the sugar and junk food im afraid, no nice way to put that, also a serious reduction in carbohydrates will help him, bread rice potatoes and pasta,, the exercise is great and getting rid of the carbs should help him get rid of the extra weight, any specific questions please ask away, good luck :)

  1. Hi Alanamay, it is good to read your post and read about the concern that you have for your dad. One of the ways that your dad can keep his blood sugars down is to lower his carb intake, this is not just sugar but also bread and cereals.. He already walks daily and should keep this up. we have a moderator Daisy who will post you further details to help your dad. He is lucky to have you to support him :)

He can be very hard tho, It feels very mean to say no sugar no sweets nothing o him :( ..But I know full well and so does he if he lost his Car he would be devistated, its his whole life, so I need to take action with him n get this sorted, Not really sure how to do that,, So many many thanks for the info :)

to be honest its such a huge amount of info and so many different ways to deal with it, it would be better if you had a good read of the forum and maybe have some questions about stuff you read and dont understand, the basic gist is....diabetics have trouble letting the sugar into our cells for various reasons, therefore the sugar stays in our blood, this over time can damage our nerves and cause all kind of horrible problems so its very important to not eat too much sugar because it cant get out very easily, carbs become sugar so for example when you eat bread you are effectively eating sugar, sounds weird but its true, this is all kind of simplified to make it digestible so id have a read :) i hope im making some sense

Hi Alanamy,

I have been diabetic type 2 for 29 years, I have learnt that I can have treats now and then, although they are not like I used to eat, I now have two squares of chocolate ocaisionally instead of a whole bar. Cakes are rare these days, I have a slice instead of a whole cake. It isn't easy to control old habits, but it is possible with help ad support. I found my support right here on this forum x

no need for thankyous its a real pleasure to try and help such a wonderful son, i wished to god id done exactly what your doing when my dad was diagnosed, your doing brilliantly and ill never not have the time to answer your questions if i can

my daughter had her 11th birthday yesterday and she had a giant jaffa cake for her birthday cake, it half killed me saying no :)

Thnk you for your advise. and taking the time to read and reply to this.

HMM. thank you.. you actually sound just lik emy dad with cakes and sweet things.. He has done well forthe first two days, no sugar, or cake, stoped sugar in tea. etc, but his mood is bad.. And yeah i totally get that.. my job is supprting people. So i want to give him support to be able to do what he needs to with some more ease if that makes sense. :) many thanks.

as pre diabetic he has the chance to make some changes now and not progress to the point of no return so its terrific that hes trying so hard, if he eats bread, make it whole grain, potatoes are better if new potatoes, rice and pasta should be brown/wholemeal

my experience of doctors isnt great, so yours doesnt surprise me at all :(

AHH Thank you !! he loves his bread, its all he moaned about not having really..!!

yes :) bread was my nemesis, burgen linseed and soya is a good choice (sold in supermarkets)

being in a bad mood is understandable really, no one wants to change their bad habits, and the changes he makes should be for life not just for a set period ilke a diet, so he has to become comfortable with what hes eating as a new lifestyle

I shall most definatly try it. To be honest ill try anything to change his diet.. :) this is some amazing info tho , as we literally had no idea what to do other then cut ou thte sugar.

most of us test our bloods with a blood monitor, the doctors dont recommend it but we all use them, we do a finger prick test before we eat and then one 2 hours afterwards and it gives us a clue as to if that food has effected our bloods too badly, i doubt your doc will give you one so you would have to buy one from the chemist if you fancied giving it a try, its a great way to monitor ourselves but the testing strips can be pricey

there are some very very clever people on the forum and id very much suggest going through some of the old threads (not just listening to me hehe) you will pick up loads of info
