Skin Sensations

I am heavily medicated for Type 2 Diabetes in the form of Metformin and Gliclazide. I also take some beta blocker and Simvastatin drugs.
Over the last month I have been getting strange sensations on the underneath of my toes. As if I have grazed them (that sort of skin sensation). Its now happening in my finger tips. I am also getting some parts of my upper legs where the skin feels numb at times. Some friends suggested its likely a defficiency or side affect of not only the diabetis but more likely the medications. Anyone had/having similar sensations?

I also forgot to mention that I am getting 'itchy all over' stuff as well. A bit like I had as a child when biological washing powder didnt agree with me (via my clothes). Could all this stuff be linked?. Itchiness starting around time of other skin sensations.
No we dont use biological washing powder anymore as it affects the wife too so can discount that.

Hi SarahQ,
Thanks for this. Leg circulation is also poor when sitting in one spot etc. I had thought it could be a vitamin defficiency also based on the drugs/condition. What do you think?.

What's the general stance on diabetics taking vitamin supplement pills?.Do Diabetics tend to develop certain vitamin defficiencies; maybe certain medications cause defficiencies also?

My neuropathy started off with itchy toes and soles of the feet. I now have quite dene neuropathy and just been diagnosed with neuropathic charcot's arthropathy (serious ****). You should mention it to your diabetic nurse at hospital. If you HBA1C is not low enough they might consider the next step up treatment (Byetta, sitagliptin, glitazone or insulin).

The Germans perscribe Alpha Lipoic Acid supplements- did seem to make the sensation on my shins better, but not the dense numbness of my feet. Vit B complex can be implicated in nerve thingies. Underactive Thyroid problems can exaserbate this as well. Drugs can rarely cause nerve symptoms.

Interesting. I frequently suffer bouts of intense itching all over my body, particularly at night, and it makes life a misery. Currently, my control is good, using gliclazide, but I wonder if the itching could be a side effect. Anyone else had this problem?

It seems possibly a side affect of the condition and/or drugs. I'm even experiencing a soreness and itching in eyes, top lip, tongue this evening. Its all very strange and all very annoying stuff. Any other advise/web reads from others experiencing some similarities greatfully appreciated. The itching drives you mad!. Cannot get to see the doctor for another week or so.

Meoman, the itching is indeed infuriating and exhausting; I spend many a night lying in a hot bath to gain some relief. In common with many diabetics I've had fungal infections from time to time but that wouldn't seem to account for the head to toe itching (sometimes even my teeth itch!)

I've found Eurax (crotamiton) lotion helpful, so you might want to give it a try until you see your doc.

Hi I suffer from neuropathy, mine started after a skiing trip and i thought it was just cold toes but 2 years later i have tried everything from chilli cream to anti-depressants, and i am now trying an anti epelepsy drug called tegratol which helps but it dont cure it, my toes feel numb but very sensitive to touch and it feels like ive got loads of hard skin underneath my toes but i havent. Im poorly controled so got to get my head around that and my gp says things may improve but no garentees

Hi
Have you spoken to your Dr about this as you may have an allergy to one of the medications you are taking? I was prescribed Gliclizide but was allergic to it (and to some of the sulpher based antibiotics), and that caused me to be red and itchy all over as well as being listless (actually zombified). Stopping the gliclazide removed the symptoms. Its worth seeing you Dr.
