Hi I'm type 2 diabetic I took insulin but it made me put on soo much weight, the hospital wants me back on it even though it made me put on 3 stone in a year. I'm really not happy i feel so much better in myself without it but my sugars are through the roof :(
Not sure what to do
If I go back on insulin I know I'll start to feel I'll again but I know I'm risking complications as the machine won't register my sugars at night it just says hi :(

Welcome, are you on low carb diet to help your type 2 and how long have you been diagnosed?

I was diagnosed around 2006 from a routine health check for life insurance lol I got a shock and was refused the insurance :/
I try to eat healthy but have to admit I sometime forget dinner
I probably eat too much mash potato as well
I really don't want to go back on insulin but hospital say it's my only choice
 
I guess I should mention I already have nerve damage, I can't feel pain except in my hands and feet where I get nerve pain and I find it hard to feel hot and cold things
 
I take morphine for the pain in my hands and feet but I stopped all my other medication I was taking soo many tablets as well as insulin and felt I'll all the time. Now I don't feel too bad it's almost like my body enjoys high sugar :)

Insulin is not your only choice if you cut out the mash and go low carb? It is better to take control of your diet rather than take insulin.

I eat healthy I'm not sure just cutting out mash will lower my sugar levels enough. I walk every day for an hour even though it's very painful and that doesn't seem to lower sugars levels either.
 
My sugars are between 25 and 30 at night before bed and sometimes higher I'm not sure what's causing such high levels
 
do you take readings first thing in the morning, before your main meal of the day and 2 hours after? What sort of readings do you get?

I'll ask the same question that most would ask. What's you typical daily diet like? Have you read the LCHF threads in the dietary section?
 
The first thing has to be getting your bg in order
You don't have to put on a lot of weight
You adjust weight through carb intake. Less carb less weight

Did you get the script filled
Do you have urine ketostrips

Are you open to the idea of taking basal or the mixed dose for a start

There is a lot of people who will help a lot here
 
I don't tend to take reading in the morning as hospital told me to take it before bed but a few days ago wasn't well in the morning so I took it and it was 25 .6
 
What I had to eat yesterday
Apple for breakfast
Omelette with cheese for dinner
Apple in afternoon
Tea I had chicken and onion in sauce I made using harrisa spices and a tin of tomatoes
Had 2 oranges about an hour after tea
 
It got the prescription for insuman comb 25 to inject 15 twice a day and tablet januvia which I'm ment to take 1 a day
I was on insuman comb 25 before but was taking 78 twice a day when I stopped it in April
 
There is a limit to what diet and other medications can do. Ultimately, if you don't have sufficient insulin then you need to replace that with injected insulin. Your levels at the moment are as you know very high.
You say that you put on weight with insulin but had you actually lost it before you started taking it? If you don't have enough insulin then you do lose weight (but have high glucose levels) , you are 'weeing' calories out. When you start taking insulin, your body can make use of the glucose and so you can gain weight.
The mixed insulin you were using isn't very flexible. There are other insulin regimes. Perhaps you could talk to the doctor about using what is called basal/bolus or MDI. This means one (sometimes 2) long term injections to cover glucose released by your liver between meals , then a separate 'fast' insulin to cope with each meal/
As you can vary the insulin for each meal, then you can vary the amount you eat. This means it is easier to control calories and weight.
 
I thought you would be on 2000 metformin as well, that keeps the insulin resistance down and you need less insulin overall

MDI will give better control, but for now the main thing is to get your bg down and make sure you don't have high ketones
Is there a chemist open where you can fill the script and get ketostrips
 
I was on 2000 metformin but I don't want to take it as it upsets my stomach was on tablets for blood pressure and cholesterol as well
I was sick n dizzy everyday and spent most my time in bed
Since stopping meds I walk every day no sickness or dizzy spells and I've lost all the weight I put on with the insulin
I' think quality of life is important and I don't want to go back to feeling sick n in bed :(
 
The hospital says I'm insulin resistant and that's why I was on so much insulin I'll talk to my dr about changing insulin as hospital wants me to stay on this one. I like your idea of having a base insulin then take a fast acting one with meals might help.
 
Have you tried the slow release metformin. Though you may not be able to take either.
I think they would want you stable on the simple 2 a day first before the harder 5 a day and precise carb counting

It sounds like one of the druds you were on didn't agree with. I guess it's a matter of starting with the insulin and adding one at a time till you find the one that makes you feel unwell
