Type 2's: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning?

26 has been a funny batch for me. Lots of wildly variant readings especially at upper end of my range. I find that is true of the Codefree generally. Anything over 7 and it could throw a wobbly. I just use it as a guide but sometimes you do want it to be more precise ( like now when I am trying to see what effect no Metformin is having so I can have a sensible discussion about it with GP who called my burning joints and muscles a bit of gentle tingling )
Anything over 7, and I would be throwing a wobbly!!

Time to ditch the codefree? Or get a new one of same? Anyone know how long these things last? Or if there's any sort if "test kit" out for them to see if they're still reading "in range"

There's a check strip that comes with them that basically just checks that the electronics are working, and you can get test solutions but these only show if the meter is within its operating range so they are not 'standard' solutions of known value.

Let's not forget though,

fasting levels,
  • Normal: 4.0 to 5.9 mmol/l (70 to 107 mg/dl)
  • Prediabetes or Impaired Glucose Glycemia: 6.0 to 6.9 mmol/l (108 to 126 mg/dl)
  • Diagnosis of diabetes: more than 6.9 mmol/l (126 mg/dl)
So a 7 is just into the diagnosis of diabetes range, and as Andbreathe has said, like me, she's been around here for a while, so getting a figure you like requires patience, and any target should be a personal level, and can change over time.

Except I think they were talking about post meal readings, not fasting.

Missed that.
My mistake then.

NICE recommended target blood glucose level ranges
Target Levels

by Type Before meals(pre prandial) 2 hours after meals(post prandial)
Non-diabetic 4.0 to 5.9 mmol/L under 7.8 mmol/L
Type 2 diabetes 4 to 7 mmol/L under 8.5 mmol/L

I've measured 'normal' above 7, which ties into the 7.8 shown in the NICE guidelines.

I've measured ;normal; above 7, which ties into the 7.8 shown in the NICE guidelines.

To be absolutely honest, we were discussing the inadequacies of the Codefree strips and how they throw wobblies when the reading is 7 or over, we weren't actually discussing our personal levels as such.

I am about to order some more Accu Chek cassettes so I can continue to cross check any I am dubious about. What annoys me is the big difference between the highest and lowest readings. Half a mmol/l I can cope with, but some are just stupid. I've just been averaging them for my own records.
I have always thought there had to be a flaw in the Codefree strips as they are so cheap.

Is the 7.8 just a reading or the average, cause 7.8 is the average to stay below if you want an hbA1c to be below 48.

Wonder if I can use it with my Contour Next..... But out of curiosity rather than real need. Will find out how I'm doing when I see practice nurse for my bloods results.

for T1 & 8.5 for T2. As I pointed out for our hbA1c to be lower than 48 we have to look at an average of 7.8 or below.

I don't know what you pointed out.
What was your question again, and I'm sure we can answer it. :)

Read back. all i wanted to know was if the 7.8 was average or a normal daily reading but the question has been answered.
It's a normal every day reading.

Day 2 no statins :) 5.2 and that's four outta the last five mornings in the 5s
