We all have SUCH different ideas of the perfect hol.

So,

When are you going?
Where?
And why?

And even if you can't/won't/don't want to go away, what would be your Great GetAway?

:D

Undecided as yet but we are definitely going to have a week away this year, probably just stay in the UK.

We've just planned and booked a week in a self catering cottage, half way between Southampton and Salisbury. For late Feb.

We've been before, and it was one of the best (and cheapest) holidays EVER!

We can take the dogs.
The accommodation is awesome (a listed chapel, sympathetically converted, with a vast kitchen that used to be the old schoolroom, a vaster main room, that used to be the chapel, a full size snooker table for Mr B, a lovely village setting, excellent kitchen equipment, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble drier - so I don't come home with any laundry to do!)
It sleeps 8 so other family can come and stay.
Perfectly situated for us to visit the Marie Rose exhibition. Several times, because it is so vast we will need to take it in bite sized chunks.
Lots of cathedrals, Stonehenge, Avebury, etc. etc.
Less than 2 hrs from my parents, so we can visit them on the way home.

I haven't been on holiday for donkey's year, would love to get away somewhere, but i'm a carer fior my elderly dad so its difficult ( plus the money)
But would love to go to the Netherlands, Norway, Italy or back to Malta ( I loved Malta) or I would dearly love to holiday in Scotland, there's a possible family named Castle that I could be related to,?? also to take teenager to show her our family background :D and Ireland as she half Scottish and Irish .
RRB:)

That property sounds lovely.

We had our last abroad holiday in 2007.

We had just retired so decided it was high time we saw more of the UK. We pledged to stay for a week in each of the old traditional counties over the coming years, staying in self catering cottages with our dogs. We have stuck to this pledge and so far have stayed a week in 29 different counties in England, Wales and Scotland. What an eye-opener to see just how different each county is, from houses to countryside, rubbish recycling to roads.

We pack up a picnic every day, whatever the weather, and visit all the various attractions suitable for dogs, castles, old churches, reservoirs and lakes, hills and dales, beaches and nature reserves. We love it. The problem for us now is the counties we haven't visited are a bit too far for us to drive to, as we get older we just can't do the very long drives, so we are repeating a few of them now.

Two booked so far for 2015, aiming for another 4.

That is an absolutely fantastic idea.

Will suggest it to Mr B.

Brilliant!!!

(And since getting dog no 1 we have been astonished how dog friendly places are nowadays. Pubs and cathedrals in particular. Weird but true. :))

Portugal in October with a gang of lads for a sixtieth birthday.
If I can get my better half to book some time off work I will take her somewhere for a week or so been looking at Cape Verde.

If I can ever get her to tie the knot lol I fancied Sri Lanka then on to the Maldives I saw one where you transfer to the resort by sea plane would love to do that

Make a list of all the traditional counties (not the new administrative ones). There are hundreds if you include Wales and Scotland, and start ticking them off! It has to be a full week though - driving through doesn't count! ;)

Your cottage sounds totally brilliant. Some of ours have been equally brilliant, just the odd one or two that fell short of expectations, but none really poor.

No plans for this year as yet. If we do go away it will probably be a short city break somewhere in Europe.

What a lovely idea Blue. :)

Hidden in there playmates is an important message: Don't leave the "big" things or the "tricky" things (in Blue's case the very long drives) until you get older and "have more time". Not one of us knows when we'll not be able to cope with those much dreamed of adventures.

And for the avoidance of doubt, not being able to cope with x or y isn't necessarily about getting on a bit, or being infirm - plans have to change for all sorts of reasons.

How true. My forever dream holiday was a safari in Africa. It kept getting put off for one reason or another. We are never likely to go now, hubby's wonky knee and other minor aches and pains would make it a nightmare rather than a dream now. We couldn't do the hours of bumping about in a rickety landrover. If you want to visit somewhere and have the means to do it, then do it.

Gulf coast, Florida, 2 weeks, May. We own half a brick in a timeshare.
Publix supermarts are everywhere and a safe port of call for low-carb, and as for full-fat, well ... lobster claws in a bucket of garlic butter at Crabby Bill's, anyone? Grouper salad?
Huge glossy tasteless apples, did you say? Why would I care?
I will miss the oranges, but it's not much of a sacrifice. Standing in a pale blue sea while a shoal of manta rays divides to pass silently either side ...

Sounds lovely. I prefer Avebury to Stonehenge, Stonehenge is so commercial now and since they've had the new visitor centre the prices have doubled. The new Mary Rose museum is awsome and the new Royal Navy museum thats just opened is really interesting (the Georgian Tea Rooms are lovely too) Chichester cathederal is lovely too, but I love the font in Salisbury. Have fun, I hope he weather is kind.

We tend to go for days out than longer hols. This year it's Fairports Cropredy Convention again. It's a 3 day music festival in a small village (Cropredy) in North Oxfordshire whose residents kindly let 20,000 of us descend on the village each August. It's a great mix of music types from Seth Lakeman to Alic Cooper (what a year that was!) or the Australian Pink Yawn (sorry Floyd). We go prepared for every sort of weather and have a great time. :singing:

I LOVE planning holidays. We have a touring caravan so can afford to go away more often and at peak times without paying silly prices!

So far, we have the following booked:

A week at Gwithian, Cornwall in the summer - we are also taking my Dad and the site is very close to a stunning beach - he loves the coast

10 nights in North Wales in the Spring - neither of us have holidayed in N. Wales so looking forward to this one :) - not taking the dogs as there's a lot we want to see/do that may be difficult with the dogs :(. They aren't being left home alone! but will be going to their usual dog hotel ;)

Weekend break at a rally in Leicestershire (with our 2 dogs)

Still in the process of planning Easter break and undecided . . .

I would like to go to Ireland at some point in the future too. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Scotland and we had a fab holiday last June on the Isle of Mull. Planning to return in 2016.

No real desire to go abroad as there's so many beautiful places in the UK

I live on an island where half of mainland Sweden goes for holiday and I live two kilometres from the Baltic sea so go swimming every day in the summer. On the other hand I work bloody hard during the summer and haven't had a proper vacation in ten years.

My mum used to say that a holiday is an investment for the rest of the year. I agree. We have only missed one year since we married in 1976, and that was a big mistake as far as general well being was concerned.
