Dying swans

So sad, swans are beautiful birds, symbols of something words struggle to describe. There are some wicked people in this world that need launching off into space with no oxygen. People who do such heinous crimes need to be caught, if you can kill something as beautiful as a swan you are capable of much more.

You have hit the nail on the head. Such a lack of empathy is very worrying.

Its hard to understand why anyone can do this, they must be empty vessels. I have a problem where i live near the bridgewater canal, manchester where fishermen just dump their cans of beer and cut fishing line amongst the spots where the returning canadian geese nest each year and its getting worse, we have two swans there too. i fear they will not return next year, i try and spend some time myself picking up the cans but its like an endless task and the Bridgewater Canal Co Ltd devastated the area by cutting loads of trees down apparently for improvement. Its beyond words really for me. It was so beautiful once and in the last year it has become unrecognizable. It has left migrating wild life over exposed for things like this to happen. Its not just the evil criminals who cause a problem but its the unwitting collusion of the professional bodies who are meant to be looking after the wildlife.

I'd call the cops. It's illegal to drink beer in outdoor public spaces here. Well done for looking out for the geese :)

This is a picture of what the canal path used to look like in 2012. I live in Manchester so its not Cornwall but it was mine, my bit of beauty.

Imagine all the trees gone on the left and cans filling the area where my dog is. I'm going for a walk tomorrow up the canal path i'll take a picture and update the thread so you can see what i really mean.

This is what it looks like today. It takes about 100 years for a tree to be fully established, they came along with their chainsaws and they culled them in a day, its not unlike the scene in Lord of the Rings where Saruman is cutting down large numbers of trees. The cans are everywhere.

We still have the two swans though and the geese have moved further up stream thankfully.

Such a shame, stupid people, if they had a brain cell they would be twice as dangerous.

What a sad world we live in when people prefer to harm, rather than enjoy such beautiful creatures. I don't often get the chance to see swans but whenever I do I am in awe of their beauty and gracefulness but usually the morons who do this kind of thing have neither.

Was this culling of trees anything to do with the tram lines? We have lost so many over the time they have been building the tram system and also a lot of green space. I travel to Media City sometimes and am apalled at some of the trash thrown into the canal and man made water spots there, all created to improve the city. Not only do these morons have no appreciation for the beautiful wildlife these waterways bring in, they have no pride or appreciation of their own city. Shame on them

Remind me, is it still a treasonous offence to harm these birds ? I know at one time they belonged to the Crown

Until 20th May 1998 killing a swan was still an act of treason. That is no longer the case but it is still illegal

No, there isn't any tram development on this stretch. I've yet to find out what the reasoning is behind why they felled all the trees and what their real plans are. I naively thought that the planners and architects of the city would have some eco guidelines in place to enhance and work with the natural habit, clearly not. They aren't just morons these monsters are something much worse. The sad thing is the wild life and established eco system has no voice and it is up to us to put it straight or live with the consequences.

So a toothless archaic law then :( Not that anyone gets hung drawn and quartered anymore, thankfully! What do you get for treason these days ? Community service ?

Let's not forget why this law was passed in the first place... To alow royalty and "noble men" a manoply on hunting/catching prime game while the "commoner" starved... ;)

Though supermarket shelves are full these days so no excuse...

What a difference ! And NOT in a good way :( Why did they think that was necessary ?

Its beyond belief. I really don't know why they thought it necessary, as its my bit of space near me i've made it my job to find out, it's pushed me to think about leaving the area, it seems no one cares about what they are doing to the place and so they have a free reign to just strip it bare, what hope is there left for city people who want to appreciate and co-habit with wildlife?

Oh dear Spencer, that's awful. Even if there turns out to be a valid reason for felling those beautiful trees (?), there is no excuse for all that litter. Who the hell do these selfish eejits think will pick up after them?

Put the word about and you and some good like minded local people could do a clear up and clean out. I have seen this type of thing before. (Manchester is where I was born) Could be worth giving it a thought. Or get in touch with the council and put it to them?

Best wishes RRB
