I have been having cripling pain in my toes and heels. The toes feel like they are in a vice and all I can do it sit and hold my breath it is so bad. I have difficulty walking at times because my heels feel so sore.
I keep my sugar levels withing the 4.5-8mmol range so surely this can't be my diabetes playing up.

I am Type 1 late onset diabetic. I do have ulceration on my legs but those come and go and itch like crazy too. I make sure I apply a good layer of cream given to me by the DR. Yet still my legs itch and sores break out. No, I don't scratch I know better than to do that.

Has anyone else had these problems, I'd like to know what you do to combat it please

How long have you been having these pains, Fleur ? Have you seen your GP about them ?

Yes I did and he said he didn't know much about diabetic complications and it could be gout and the heel could be Policeman's heel. I have been having the pain for about 9 months and it's getting to me. I dread going out as I have to wear shoes and feel comfy in my slippers. I still get shooting pain but at least I can sit down and put my feet up. Grit my teeth so as not to yell ouch!

That's a bit non specific ! It may be worth seeing him/her again and ask for a referral. Actually, you should be seeing a Podiatrist once a year as routine, have you seen one ? If not ask to see one ASAP. You should be able to self refer as a diabetic via your surgery , but if they don't have one attached, your GP can ( and should ) do this for you.

According to the podiatrist whom I saw a year ago I don't need to be seen as my feet looked good and won't see me due to cuts in the NHS. I will phone the SDN and what she says.

Thank you I will self refer myself tomorrow. The Dr looked at my feet and declared well no sores here it looks fine! That was it!. I hope I can see the podiatrist really soon

The Podiatrist will do tests and try and determine what the cause of your discomfort is, hopefully then they'll get you on the right treatment path. Good luck.

Hi there,
I am a Chiropodist and it sounds like Plantar Fasciitis, so mention it to your Chiropodist when you see him/her.
Thank you I am apparently not entitled to see the chiropodist as I am 68 and my feet according to my Dr look fine

@fleurtess - If your doctor doesn't know what's causing your pain, he should refer you to someone who can give you a diagnosis. Is there another GP you can see? It sounds like you might have to make a fuss to get this resolved.

I am seeing another GP tomorrow. Another locum. My own GP ran away to Australia. I am going to make my views known not just about my toes and heels but vitamin D too. it seems to me GPs in this part of Scotland don't want to be bothered with the over 60 group of people. One GP told me I have too much wrong with me, hence when I kept going in saying I'm diabetic I was told I was imagining it and then crashed into ketonacidosis with glucose levels that were dangerous At 147mmol. Then I got a sort of apology from the GP. But I don't trust her and avoid seeing that Dr. I would rather see a locum

I hope you get better service tomorrow.

Hi. Don't know if this helps
Or is remotely linked to your problem but if you are seeing gp it may be worth asking. I have agonising pains in my feet and toes, its like walking on hot coals!!! Mine is due to pernicious anaemia not my LADA. It disappears like magic a couple of days after my injection and reappears every time my next injection is due. Might be worth asking him to test your B12 levels?? Sue xxx

Thank you so much Sue. You are right it is exactly like walking on hot coals or sitting comfortably when suddenly it feels like some evil thing is squeezing my toes in a pair of pliers. I will ask for a vitamin D blood test. I have had anemia in the past and was put on liquid iron for 3 months
