Amborg

I was diagnosed with Type 2 in the summer of 2017 and my husband October 2016 after being hospitalised for a stroke. We're both fat and we were both put on Metformin and given referrals to see a endocrinologist. We never went, we stuck our ends in the sand.

May 2019 I was starting to feel fed up with my situation. Previously I left my health in the hands of my husband. Stop, my health my life my responsibility. I am originally from the States but have been living in Italy for 18 years now. Long enough to know how the system works here. I started to have tingling on the soles of my feet and the palms of my hands. I weighed about 240 pounds and fed up with all of the things I was missing out on because of my health and weight. I went to my family doctor who gave me referrals to a dietician, endocrinologist and neurologist (I also have epilepsy).

I had one visit with the dietician, who right off the bat suggested gastric sleeve, considering my numbers (including blood pressure, high cholesterol) and age. I am now 48 years young. She then asked about my husband. I was honest and told her he was very similar. Overweight, diabetic type 2, high cholesterol and stroke survivor. Next appointment she wanted to see him as well, My husband refused to go because HE wanted to chose the doctor, preferably male. So I did not go to my second appointment and I didn't go to the endocrinologist.

January 2020 it was obvious my husband wasn't going to do anything to improve his situation and had the same intentions about me. So I said to heck with this I am taking things in my own hands for MY health. I set an appointment with an endocrinologist for February. My blood sugar the day of my appointment was 292. She ordered blood and urine work and had me record daily my blood sugar. Next appointment set for May 6th.

Five days after my first visit, my husband was admitted into the hospital for a series of mini strokes, sleep apnea, diabetes and high cholesterol. Three weeks after being admitted, he was transferred to a hospital an hour and a half away, specialised in weight loss and also a good neurology department working with stroke patients. In total he spent a week shy of three months. This was a wake up call for me for sure. That I need to get my health in order. NOW:

My mother died at the age of 65, heart and kidney failure as a result of diabetes type 2. I want to live a long and healthy life.
