I originated from Ghana and came to the UK in 1984 on a postgraduate program. I worked in different fields and settled in teaching math in upper schools in Bedfordshire. I am now retired. I was diagnosed diabetic in 2015. I enjoy science and research so I to have a good understanding and tackled it with the help of three meters and eliminating foods not helpful for me. My diet is not very Western so this was important. I moved from four tabs daily to two within a month. My HA1c have been 46-48 mmol/l to date. For the past two years I take only one tablet most of the time. At my last review in 2019, it was suggested that I try to stop the tabs for two weeks and see how I get on. Frankly, I was scared to be off completely because I had unanswered questions in all my readings. Four weeks ago I was seeking answers to aspects of diabetes to go beyond blood sugar. I found what I believe was my answer and was then motivated to stop the tabs and mix fasting and low carb diet. I took my readings at least four times a day in the first week and now twice as my confidence grew in the knowledge of what is happening. From week one I averaged 4.9 on the meter. I know the ultimate test will be in the eating of more than 50g carb. I was searching on the Lidl low GI bread, which is the only carb I have missed in the last four weeks, when I saw the community and registered.
