Hello.
My name is Chris and I’ve had type 1 diabetes for 10 years. I control it with daily NovoRapid and Lantus insulin injections. I generally don’t mind having diabetes, although on occasions it can be very frustrating. I like travelling to new countries and I’m currently living abroad with my partner in a former-Soviet country where healthcare is nowhere near as advanced as it is in the UK.
In regards to diabetes, I actually heard somebody suggesting that diabetes was the equivalent to a ‘drug addiction’. How very nice. Unfortunately, most people over here obviously do not have very good diabetes care, therefore most people’s opinions of diabetes are very negative and are focused only on the complications of this condition.
This is my first year living abroad and I am managing my diabetes with a large backlog of insulin and glucose strips, needles and lancets that I ordered in the UK when I was there. I plan to travel and live abroad for the next 10 years, making the occasional return trip to the British Isles every year to visit my family. I will not let diabetes affect my plans for the future!
Thank you for reading. I would really like to use this site to meet fellow ex-pat diabetics in order to discuss and solve the problem of getting insulin and controlling diabetes abroad. Please contact me if you would like to share your experiences.
