I became a type 1 diabetic after having Asian flu in December 1958.
My mother insisted I got it as a result of flu. The consultant said it wasn't the cause but \i know it was.
My grandmother died of it in 1924. She became diabetic after contracting flu.
There is a genetic factor which was...
You have a heck of a lot to cope with - T1D plus a heart problem. To try to ensure you do not have debilitating hypos I suggest you ask for a Freestyle Libre, if you don't already have one, as it is much easier to test your BG levels. No need to stop and do a finger prick test. I also suggest...
I've been on Lantus and Levimir - one injection at night - but the diabetes consultant suggested I try Tresiba. This is much better for me stabilising my blood sugars overnight. Small dose before I go to bed but I eat very small amounts of carbohydrate.
Welcome to the club. I've had type 1 since 1959 - 60 years! But that's no big deal. I have been fit and well for all of that time until recently and now have a heart problem. Waiting for an operation to replace my aortic valve. The cardiologists say the cause is age as opposed to diabetes but...
No, you can't because you are still taking insulin. A disease or medical condition is only in remission if you no longer need to take any medication to control it.
I have to order mine through the NHS Trust that covers my area. My GP's surgery is not permitted to prescribe it. I have to collect the Libre from my local hospital pharmacy. I do a finger prick test if I am going to be driving anywhere just to confirm the accuracy of the Libre.
60 years and still going strong with no major complications. Consultants put that down to my being very disciplined about my diet. Far better to forgo biscuits, cakes and chocolate than suffer the results. I don't miss them and much prefer savoury food. Life is easier than when I was diagnosed...
That's great news. I can imagine your relief. I had laser treatment for maculopathy about 6 years ago. saw the ophthalomogist at the hospital 3 weeks ago. He told me that my eyes are in remarkably good condition considering I have been a type 1 diabetic for 60 years. I had two cataract ops in...
Type 1 on insulin for 60 years. Blood pressure spasmodically high for about 2/3 years. Thought it might be white-coat syndrome. DN suggested 24 hr BP monitor. Went to get it and told nurse about feeling bad a few days before. Heart was pounding, dreadful pain on left side of neck forcing me to...
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 60 years ago but haven't got any medals!! In those days it was one injection a day and a strict diet. Not easy when you are 16 and at school. But the consultant warned me what could happen of I did not stick to it and hence I have. As far as I am concerned it...
I have suffered severe night time hypos coming round on the floor and wondering where the hell I am. It takes a while for me to realise I am hypo. I am usually able to find the glucose tablets that I keep in various places in my bedroom. I consume about 3 and drag myself into bed to recover. I...
As a pvc driver taking insulin I consider it irresponsible of you not to test your blood sugars regularly and, as others have pointed out, every insulin user driver has to test before driving and at 2 hour intervals. You must comply with the rules if you want to retain your license. Not doing so...
