    Whey Protein lowering my BG

Totally agree @LonelyFatGuy - and on that note, from a biological standpoint, I haven't personally chased down the mechanism for why this happens exactly in our guts today, but protein on it's own or with carbs acts differently to protein with fat. That may sound contentious, but really isn't...

So sorry to hear this @Rachox ... and I likewise have nothing. Sometimes it just sucks...

    Whey Protein lowering my BG

@MrsA2 - if you are having some dairy, you are likely getting plenty of whey protein as it is- if you think of the nursery rhyme - it's just the liquid portion of split milk. (Dried into a powder of course) So - nothing inherently "good" or "bad" that doesn't apply to other forms of dairy...

    Whey Protein lowering my BG

It isn't so much that Whey protein does something unexpected with sugar, more that it has it's own insulin response- https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16002802/ So - it will (if your glucose is high, which is unlikely for @Melgar) then the insulin will have the effect that insulin does. You do...

    Diagnosis Limbo

It's all very complicated and confusing. Welcome to the club. I was initially diagnosed as T1 as @EllieM says - and did a year of insulin before a C-peptide confirmed active insulin production. Just to nudge @Melgar 's characterisation - it may well be correct about the timing, but C-Peptide is...

    Diabetes and brain function

Because the pathways for converting protein into energy are inherently inflammatory, because they have to deal with the nitrogen that isn't present in fats or glucose. Sorry - I'm sounding both defensive and at the same time condescending - I'm taking this for granted, but it's not at all...

    Diabetes and brain function

Its gluconeogenesis. Not directly, of course the liver breaks down protein into amino acids then turns those into glucose Here's the most obvious link, but I don't think this is controversial at all. https://www.diabetes.co.uk/nutrition/protein-and-diabetes.html

    Diabetes and brain function

It's a really tough situation managing conflict in a consultation. I've come out shaking all over, and had to go just sit down and write notes about what was said. I got the "let me finish" treatment as well... that was fun.. :-( ... funny thing is, I'd love to go back and talk to that...

    Statins and liver function

That's interesting @Usethetaff - the clinical guidelines post 2013 actually call for not starting statins in the event of dialysis being necessary, however to continue if a patient is already taking statins. The actual phrase in use is "given the lack of clinical benefit for lipid reduction...

    Statins and liver function

@Beechnut - you may be interested to know that LDL-C isn't actually part of the list of measurements for metabolic syndrome - it focuses on triglyceride (lower is better) and HDL levels (higher is better). https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/metabolic-syndrome From...

Confused whether Type 1 or Type 2

No worries - there is so much confusion surrounding ketones, and most of it is simply that lots of people know about DKA being a problem, and the bit in the word they focus on is the "K" - when that is fine, the problem is the "A". Biologically speaking, it's better to think of ketone bodies...

Confused whether Type 1 or Type 2

Sorry - I need to jump in here, I'm sure this is a genuine belief, but; Diabetic Ketoacidosis - is the state where your blood has become acidic. The clue is in the name. The problem is the ph level of the blood, and the fact that enzymes cannot function in that level of acidity. That's it...

NHS Healthier You diabetes prevention programme

OK - I hear you... (I couldn't have told you what unsaturated actually meant a year ago, so don't feel like this is some kind of secret society here; simply that much of what we've been led to believe all our lives turns out not to have been great advice). Do you have any sense of what would...

NHS Healthier You diabetes prevention programme

Had a scan over the advice for how to eat if you are prediabetic. Some good advice, and on the whole, better than I expected, but some things that at least I know just don't gel with my experience. 1. "Fats containing saturated fat raise the fat levels in our blood" - well that seems to make...
