OK after reading the replies you have got I have a couple of things to add. Go back to the GP or dsn and ask for 2 things
1 ask to go on to SR meformin as this will help with the wind and bloated feeling.
2 if you stick with the gliclizide ask for a meter and test strips being as gliclizide...
I am a member of slimming world. I am also type 1.5. And it works if you stick to plan despite it being a struggle with insulin I lost 1.5 stone in about 3 months. The group leader should have basic knowledge of diabetes and should have info to pass on to members as well

My last Hba1c was at 117. I also had keytones of 4.6 I was on the verge of DKA. So yes you are really high!!! Why would you refuse treatment? It is highly likely your going to end up in hospital with very serious complications.
Sorry I am confused here not insulin dependant and treated with insulin? Isn't it the same thing? What I would do is get my prescription changed to the cheaper one then you can get strips on script and also buy strips with using one meter
