I was a sportsman, especially when young - rugby, soccer, tennis, cricket, rifle shooting - and so always kept very fit.
In 1970 I was diagnosed with tablet/carbohydrate 'portions' diet treatment diabetes, at the age of 27, following an insurance test which had revealed sugar in my urine!
Following the 2 year 'honeymoon period' - and following a number of infections & sores I was placed on to insulin treatment - however despite many knock-backs I continued to play at a high level of both soccer and tennis - also badminton and squash - thus keeping very fit, which has in my opinion always helped maintain a high level of diabetic control.
Hypos I do get periodically, but no hypers, but I find that with 'analogue' type insulin I can recognise the highs and lows! I have been on the Basal Bolus regime for approx. 10 years.
Now in retirement - and following hip replacement in 2000 - I no longer am able to play any sport, so enjoy my garden - all of which helps to keep me reasonably fit.
