It is difficult at first because you have to learn how various foods and insulin doses affect you. After getting that figured out and getting a continuous blood glucose meter (if possible) it has become much easier, however, you will still have some highs and lows. It is a huge learning curve...

Yes, I also get depressed after a hypo and for severe ones can be emotionally and physically drained for several days. Emotionally, I then feel like a total failure and get super depressed.

I also had the same type of reaction when I first started on insulin. My elbows itched like crazy. After a few months this went away, so perhaps my body became accustomed to the insulin. I don't speak as any sort of expert, just want to acknowledge similar experience.
