    Little shell shocked..

I know that feeling, suddenly finding out about your condition. Many here do. The good news is this is the right place to get support and good advice. You are now one of this big family, ask anything you want to know. Read other peoples stories, you will see what helps. One essential thing is to...

    Why don't people get it?

Your question is why don't they get it. I suppose the simple answer is they do not live with it themselves, and do not understand it. My doctor had a chart on her office wall showing that famous plate of food for diabetics, with one third carbs. Friends not knowing or remembering is one thing...

    Flu vaccination

Just had my pneumonia jab, and booked for flu jab next week.

Getting problems with feet when sugar is low

I had symptoms before diagnosis, like a rolled up sock under the balls of my feet all the time. As I lowered BG, I also got more trouble with cold feet keeping me awake at night. To complicate that, I also have Reynauds syndrome, so hands and feet get cold very fast. The only real change I have...

What was your fasting blood glucose? (with some chat)

5.2 today. Lowest I have seen, but keto diet for the last few weeks is really beginning to do the trick.

Have you ever lied about having T1D...?

One story from me that might just be useful. A few years ago I worked with someone who was type 1, and although then I did not know much about it, at least I was aware. He had made no secret of it. Due to working with just me in a cold warehouse, and being late for his meal, he started to behave...

NHS and the dreaded libre allergy

I do not use any of these sensors or pumps, but I have seen many people with allergic reactions to adhesive plasters. That would be my first thought. Also some people react badly to certain metals, especially nickel. Having worked in laboratories many years ago, dermatitis was a well known...

    Ground/milled flax seed

I use the Linwoods one with nuts in it too, as I don't like nuts much but they are supposed to be useful! Never had it go off, but I keep it in sealed plastic containers. I just put some in gravy or sprinkle on vegetables. I had not thought of it as a thickener, but I suppose it can do that.

    Two monitors different results

If you stick to one meter, and keep the other in case of loss or failure, it may be less worrying! What is important is trends in your readings. Is it staying high or getting lower for example. Check after meals regularly and adjust what you eat to see if changing sends it the right way. Reading...

What do you wish people knew?

The one thing that comes to mind, that applies to every one of us, is that we are all different. It is easy to place us in very few categories, but every single one has a slightly different set of problems, causes, and outcomes. Please, therefore, do not consider that type 1 or type 2 tells you...

Type 1 I Feel Like I Speak About Diabetes Too Much

I spotted myself going on about it when newly diagnosed. Its a natural thing with the shock and realisation of it all. Up to that point I had not really thought about it, as most people do not. To us, its a big thing, a major factor in our lives. Its good to let off steam and talk, but probably...

    Lower Readings At Weekends

I drink coffee some days and not others, and I have not noticed any difference. It is ground coffee and I like it industrial strength so I reckon it would show up. But maybe thats just me. Sleep and stress do make a difference though, and lots of stress seems to make for bad sleep patterns too.

    Experience With Doctors

I am pleased to hear you have found something that is starting to work for you. It is good advice to monitor your food intake and by testing after meals you may begin to see the worst culprits and perhaps change them to something else. Another thing I found by doing that is the time of day some...

    Telling People You're Diabetic

An interesting thread and shows how we all differ! I make no secret of my T2, but most people are not interested. I deliberately told some people because I wanted to explain some of my behaviour before diagnosis. I was getting extremely tired and stroppy at times. Being more sensitive to the...

Dietary And Nutritional Approaches For Prevention And Management Of Type 2 Diabetes

I have seen a nurse, once. She gave me my flu shot last year. She asked why I was there, and I told her it was because I was diabetic. She seemed quite surprised she had not seen me before, as she was the diabetic nurse. The doctor I see regularly is the practise diabetic specialist, and she is...
