I have been a vegetarian for over 50 years and a vegan for over 30 years. I am a LADA and was misdiagnosed for 9 years. Medications all made me sick so luckily I was put on long acting insulin. I had even asked my original doctors if I could be a type 1 as I had an uncle that had died from being a type 1. I had a healthy diet, I swam laps and I walked all day at work. I was told no by my first doctor who said the medications wouldn't work at all if you were a type 1. My first endo wanted me back on the medications that had made me sick and said no you're not a type 1 and never tested me.. I refused to go back to him after 2 visits.
I switched to a new doctor who added fast acting insulin and I did well with my A1C ranging from 6.8 to 7.2. As soon as my new group hired a new endo she sent me to her. I had given up asking by the time I switched, but the new endo tested me right away. Definite positive type 1, she thought I would be upset, I was happy. It explained everything and I now knew what I was dealing with and could adjust accordingly. I had thought my body could deal with the skipped shot off and on and being haphazard about it. I now knew it couldn't. I was blessed in that endo and her assistant was also a type 1. I got a CGM and a Omnipod pump at her prodding as soon as she found out I was a type 1. She said I would love it and I did!
I do not low carb and I have an A1C that seems to stay at the low 30's and I am happy with that. I love my fruits, vegetables and whole grains, vegan style of course!!!
