A little about me: I am UK born and raised. We migrated to Australia in 2007. I spent nearly 29 years as a nurse and midwife with a brief pause while I produced three amazing children. I also worked five years for an international weight loss company and I won many awards having some of the biggest and most successful meetings in Australia.
I had my first child when I was 27 years old, my pregnancies were wonderful with the exception of one thing, my blood sugars were high, although not quite high enough to be called diabetic and as a consequence I had very big babies (+/- 10lb). Like many women having children was the start of my descent into obesity. With each birth I gained weight and then never quite returned to a healthy weight before getting pregnant again. I ended up carrying more than 17kg over a normal BMI. I have yo-yo'd my entire adult life and lost weight time and again through conventional 'healthy' eating and grim determination. Losing weight shouldn't be so hard should it? The truth is that it doesn't have to be.
In 2008 it was discovered completely by accident that I had pre-diabetes. A visit to the doctor for an unrelated issue and routine bloods showed that I had high insulin levels and a slightly raised HbA1c. At the time I buried my head firmly in the sand and continued to follow what I thought to be a 'healthy' diet.
Eighteen months ago someone gave me a book to read 'The Grain Brain' by Dr David Perlmutter. It was life changing. I felt so many emotions, but the main thing I felt was that everything I thought I knew about healthy eating and moderation was all wrong. I felt let down and worse as a health care professional I felt that I had let people down sharing incorrect, worse, damaging advice.
I swapped to a low carbohydrate, healthy fats diet immediately. It took a little practice but was so worth it.
I lost weight easily (and I maintain easily too). My blood sugars are normal, my HbA1c is now bang on normal too. I have more energy, sleep better, have gorgeous skin (though I say it myself) and my irritable bowel syndrome which has been the bane of my adult life has GONE!
I love living low carb and would strongly recommend everyone to eat this way, diabetic or not. This is PREVENTATIVE not just for controlling diabetes.
