Thanks for all your comments, and useful information. It rather confirms my fear, but it's good to know how it generally works. Have to rethink this I guess.

If I buy a pump and pay to be trained and set up with it, will my pct provide the ongoing support for the pump? (I have been considered suitable for a pump in the past, but the usual lottery has meant that nothing has happened about it so far.) I'd be grateful for views on this. Thanks.
