I am a Type 2 Diabetic. Diabetes seems to run in the family..Dad has it and mum had it. Dads sister had it. All my live I have eaten well, used supplementation and kept my weight under control.
I was diagnosed after a lightning strike hit the house next door and travelled through our shower rose and flung me across the bathroom. Saw the doctor later on that day and she ran a battery of tests to ensure non of my vital organs had been affected. They hadn't. It was at this time I was diagnosed....just by chance.
Was sent off to the local hospital that was running workshops for Diabetics, and as I sat in the class, I looked around and didn't feel like I belonged there. I was trim, healthy and fit.
The educator was a large lady who proceeded to hammer home the importance of eating enough carbohydrate and to push home her point, had 2 tables set up with all sorts of things that we could eat, and those to keep away from. She also talked about the importance of exercise etc.
Anyway, I sat and listened for a time and dutifully took all the pamphlets home to study them. Within them I found a meal planning guide.
To cut a long story short, I followed this plan to a T and by the end of the first week, I was so sick, bloated and unwell, that I decided to ring them. In fact I was so angry at how the system works to "treat" diabetics, that I said, "No wonder there is an epidemic. You guys clearly don't know what you are doing. If you are going to put an educator up in front of a class, he/she should at least be "walking the talk". They felt that I must have misunderstood what they were talking about but clearly I hadn't, as I had the brochures in front of me.
I decided to go it alone and obtained a Glucometer to help me track what is going on and it is a godsend. I have three monthly testing done and would like to be able to get under 7.4.
I found your website a little while ago when I was looking for some info. I have been lurking on the sidelines reading and learning and am amazed at how willing your members are to share what works and what doesn't.
I am currently doing a Keto eating plan. Took me a few days to actually get into it as with everything, one has to get organised. Cleaned out the pantry and stocked up. What is surprising is that I'm not hungry at all. Intermittent fasting 6 days 16:8 with a fasting day once a week.
The Dawn Phenomenon is an issue for me as I can't seem to get the reading down past 8.7. Because of the high reading I go do some exercise to get it down otherwise I can struggle all day trying to drop it so that I can at least eat. I can go to bed with a 6.9 reading and then wake up to 8.7. Very frustrating.
Swimming (deep water aqua aerobics) works miracles. I can go down from 8 to 6.4 with just 30 mins. I also use a Pedometer to track activity when I can't swim. 10k is the goal.
Have been onto the Diet Doctor site and have downloaded some of their recipes and plan to put the most yummy ones in a folder that I have started so that I have a 'go to' spot when I get stuck for a meal.
If I could get some feedback on the Dawn Phenomenon that would be great!. I know that some members choose to not take any notice of it.
Our pharmacy gave me a new Glucometer a weeks ago (Accu check) and I love how it syncs to my ipad automatically and I have room to add anything I want and can see at a glance how I am doing. Would love to get off medication and control by diet.
Thanks again for this site and to the wonderful members willing to share.
