    Car insurance premiums

I've seen insurance for Type 1's change dramatically through the years. When I got my first car in 1978 soon after deing diagnosed, I was charged £600 per quarter for 3rd party only (this was 1978 remember, when petrol was under 50p a gallon). I had to have medicals and letters from my doctor...

    Colouring Insulin!

I think it would have to be quite a strong dye to show up in the line, and how much would it discolour your body tissue I wonder? As for the bubbles, I always thought they were a big no-no. Then whilst an in-patient for an unexplained runaway BG increase one time, I queried a 4 inch long bit...

    Diabetics have to queue?

Oh yes it does! maria b, Yes Diabetes is a condition we live with, but don't be misled into believing it doesn't stop us doing things. When I was first diagnosed as type1 over 30 years ago, as an aircraft engineer I was planning to become a flight engineer. That was instantly scuppered by...

    Diabetics have to queue?

Jimmy, At first glance I was going to simply reply that you don’t need a queue-dodgers band, or a letter, you just need a pack of glucose tabs, a BG tester, a hat and a bit of patience, like the rest of us have to make do with. Then again, you didn’t mention how serious your Diabetes is but...

to fridge or not to fridge??

I've often wondered about this. Keeping in-use Insulin at ambient temp to reduce Insulin to body temp mismatch at time of injection is good, but what about inhibiting growth of bacteria? Once air has been introduced to the phial to replace the Insulin taken out, wouldn't it be better to keep the...

panicked over blood glucose of 4.9

Re: paniciked over blood gluclose of 4.9 Not God, but 30 years ago (before being discharged from hospital after being diagnosed type 1) it was standard practice to induce a hypo under supervision so the docs could be sure patients would be able to recognize & deal with a hypo appropriately...

    About meters

As type 1 I find meter manufacturers are tripping over themselves to offer me free new meters (as a lost leader obviously). I've heard the strips are a horrendous price and the meters are becoming increasingly carefully designed to make you waste a strip if you're not very careful. It's...

whats the worst thing about a pump?

I find the worst thing about a pump is the gradual reduction in efficiency of the infusion site over the 3 day 'life' of the site. Pumps are very precise instruments and most other variables are accurately catered for except this one, which has been totally ignored. My pump has a 'bolus...

How much alcohol does everyone drink?

Nil. When I was first diagnosed age 19, drinking was the thing to do at that age. I tried twice after being put on insulin, and both times ended up in an ambulance. Both occasions involved just a couple of bottles of Pils ( because of it's low sugar content) and a vodka and diabetic lime juice...

    Definition of Hypo attack?

I have asked what they mean and they've gone away to consider it. I have no idea of what they'll dream up as a response, but I am very worried about what it might be, which i why I'm trying to find an official definition for myself. Gotta be ready for them! By doing this I am hoping to to...

    Definition of Hypo attack?

Are we saying hypoglycemia (3.9 and below) is NOT considered an attack until it becomes disabling? If so, that would indeed help..... Do you have an official reference for this? The DVLA form DIABINF Feb 2009 issue gives sound advice and figures but does not use the word attack at all.

    Definition of Hypo attack?

Thanks for the advice SS and cugila, This is a tricky problem at present, as I probably shouldn't divilge the name of my employer nor the authority whose regs they have to comply with. Suffice to say they seem to thrive on ambiguity, which they can then use to prevent issue of a permit or...

    Definition of Hypo attack?

Hi Folks, I'm being asked some very specific questions relating to an application for a driving permit (not a UK DVLA licence) and I can't find a definition for hypoglycemic attack. Sure I have the occasional drift down into hypoglycemia which I notice and correct, but an attack suggests...
