I was diagnosed in mid 1950, my father was a GP and spotted that I was unwell. I have been treated for type 1 since then. First with bovine insulin, then pork insulin using stainless steel syringes that had to be regularly sterilised in boiling water on the stove.
I was educated at preparatory school (St Goar School, Clifton, Bristol), Clifton College Bristol, University of Bristol (1968-71) B.Sc Hons, Bristol University Ph.D. in Zoology (1971-1974), University of Bristol D.Sc. 2001.
I have lectured and researched in anatomy/neuroanatomy. Research Fellow in Anatomy (University of the West Indies, 1975-1977), Lecturer in Anatomy (University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica 1977-1980). Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (St George's Hospital Medical School, London 1980-1983). Lecturer in Human Anatomy (University of Glasgow, 1983 -1990), Senior Lecturer in Human Anatomy (University of Glasgow, 1990-2013). Retired in 2013 aged 64.
Married Denise Alexandra Batten at Merton Park, London in 1983. We had three children, Charlotte Mary Maxwell (born Aug 3rd 1988, died Aug 17th 1988), David Martin Maxwell (born April 26th, 1990) and Alistair William Maxwell (born September 3rd, 1991). David became coeliac in 2003, currently Ph.D. student in Computing Science at the University of Glasgow. Alistair graduated in Bioinformatics and currently works at Glasgow University as a Bioinformatician.
