I keep wondering to myself of I had type 2 at the age of 6? Is that possible? Constant thrush and lack of energy. I was constantly took to doctors for thrush. Father bought us a bidet and helped especially at 3am in the morning. Ring a bell?

Type 2 diabetes in children is usually either genetic or in an overweight child.
Thrush can be reoccurant due to a weak immune system, the bidet may have relieved symptoms but would have made problem worse as you are cleaning away the good bacteria.

Like other type 2 adults I wasn't overweight at that age. To date no other person in our huge families has diabetes. One of my great aunts had it in very old age.

Did you have a lot of antibiotics before the age of 6? Thrush can be caused by a build of candida in the bowel. Antibiotics can destroy the delicate balance of bacteria in the bowel.

Or maybe any stress at a young age?

I was first taken to the GP with thrush at age 10 and have often wondered the same thing. I don't get it while I am in good control of my BS on low carbs. As soon as I go off track (and I do) the thrush invariably comes back.

That's the thing thrush can be a sign of imbalance and too much sugar but it doesn't necessarily mean you are T2. It was probably a good indicator of what the future would bring though. There has been research on gut bacteria and T2 so it's all linked, but I doubt that either of you were full blown T2 back then. That's just my opinion of course.

(Oh and Hi @RosieLKH :) )

I don't remember being stressed but anything can stress a young child. Lack of confidence for eg. Clinging to my mums legs even at that age. Not a very mature 6yr old. An over protective mum. Even then.
I guess genetic prediabetic maybe? 2 sisters have not been tested. Mum has thou.
I wouldn't be surprised if older sister hasn't got it but she was born stressed. Sisters don't you love them! I'm piggy in the middle. Mediator. Problem solving at birth. Ha ha
I know my appendix burst at 13yrs old so gut bacteria definitely involved.
Bells palsy at 21yr old.
Underactive thyroid at 22yr old then
Diabetes type 2 at 31 yr old. (13yrs ago)
.......always knew my body was different compared to siblings and friends.

Reading your last post you do appear to have a couple of autoimmune
conditions whilst young .
Your hypo thyroid and bells palsy .

May be worth asking this with your GP or DSN ?

Stress is a factor with our BG levels - often sending them upwards .
A lot of stress over long intense periods of time could be an impacting factor ?
Time will or can do its damage ?

It is hard to clarify this as its an unseen thing within the body .
We feel the stress 'some times' but rarely actually see it .
Definite link with diabetes and an under or overactive thyroid .
Specialists often see this they have expressed .

A few years ago I attended a talk by a Paediatric Diabetes Consultant and she said that the very small number of Type 2s she had in her clinic were exclusively of Indian Subcontinent ethnicity and that T2 was almost unknown amongst children of European ethnicity.

So the only diabetes in childhood is type 1 in the uk?
Thanks for clarification.

Don't think so, @ickihun,
Consultant said that she had not had any T2 kids in her experience, several years ago. This could be down to a small sample size, and/or, that she /her team had not diagnosed T2! T2 is a pretty "broad church" AKA " not T1!

Does it really matter ickihun? What could you do about it? You can only deal with the present and make plans/build for the future. Unless you had diagnostic tests, showing positive results at that age, which were ignored, I doubt you have recourse anyway.

Sadly, there is a growing incidence of T2 in children and adolescents these days. Some will of course be genetically influenced or caused by other medical conditions, but I would say the important thing, if you are concerned for your own children would be to keep them trim and watch out for anything worrying. By that latter remark, I'm possibly thinking of things like PCOS is adolescent girls, which unfortunately often leads to some thickening of the waistline in itself.

@AndBreathe your right. Also spot on for my kids. No girls just boys but I test the 8yr old and keep an eye on his diet. He is huge though. He is over 4 ft and a size adult 6 shoe. He isn't slim either. In the new year I'll take him to a dietician which looks after kids weight just in case it gets out of hand. Toddler is solid but in range for his length.
The 8yr old is like me. Very active and physical. Loves cycling, swimming and mini jogging. And what a mover on the dance floor! Ha ha.
Once this trapped nerve thing goes I'm back with him.
We walk for miles in Summer but this winter I'm in agony. I'm missing our long walks.
My bgs are good so dizzy spells and palpitations must be from new blood pressure tablet needing to settle down.
I think I'll keep hold of that crutch just in case. God help me if I pass out. I'll probably break something.
So looking forward to being pain free to enjoy my swimming again. No pleasure at mo.
Thank god it's Christmas and plenty of cheer.
Merry Christmas @AndBreathe !
Have a good one! :)
