If i remember correctly - when you're low your breath is meant to smell like pear drops. Pretty sure the animal can pick up the scent and effectively be trained to jump on you when it picks up this certain smell.The fact they can train those dogs to detect hypoglycemia is very cool, I've always wondered how they manage to do that and how long it takes. And what one has to do to get one of those dogs. We have 3 dogs but they stay downstairs and we sleep upstairs.
I had a look into it a while back and there are a few charities that supply dogs for people will little or no hypo awareness. To train yourself though it could cost thousands.
