Metformin SR was introduced by Merck to address the gastro-intestinal side effects of plain metformin, not necessarily to make it a once per day drug. The datasheet states that if control deteriorates on once per day Metformin SR, one should go back to the Metformin SR several times per day. Do you take all your SR at one time? If so, it might be worth going back to a smaller dose several times per day like when you were on plain metformin, ie the same metformin dose as originally but SR tablets rather than plain tablets.
best wishes

wont eating loads of eggs push your cholesterol levels up?

No. Dietary cholesterol does not increase body cholesterol. The old theory that it did was discarded a long time ago. Eat as many as you like. Our livers make our cholesterol as and when it is needed. Any obtained from diet just means the liver makes less.

Yes - lots of uncertainty here. But recent analysis is interesting:-

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2728487

Each half an egg per day increased risk of cardiovascular disease 6%, each 300 mg cholesterol per day was associated with a 17% increase in CVD. The effect of eggs disappeared when one adjusts for the whole cholesterol intake (including the eggs) suggesting that it is the cholesterol in the eggs that is the problem. I like my full English breakfast, so this is a blow. :(
