banana's, fake people,
Hi All,
Can anyone give me some advice as to why I would have high potassium levels. Back in june I had quite a severe hypo and somehow managed to fracture my pelvis in 3 places and also a rib. This healed well after spending 3 weeks in hospital and allowed home with a zimmer frame and other various devices. After spending 2 weeks at home I was admitted again with uroseptis and severe headaches (and a pulsing sound in my head) which I was put on iv antibiotics for treatment for the UTI, but no one really paid much attention to my head which I found was the most probmatic. It was then discovered I had anaemia(9.5) and high potassium levels. Because of this my 5mg ramipril was stopped. As I had made the decision not to have a blood transfusion nothing was explained to me) I was discharged and told to return as an outpatient in two weeks time (still with a headache!). While waiting until this appointment my health deteriated quite fast and I could hardley stay awake or cope with day to day activities, the pain in my head also become alot worse. On the day of my follow up appointment I explained to the doctor how bad I felt and his exacts words were "we don't deal with headaches make an appointment with your GP in two weeks". I left leaving the hospital sobbing and wishing someone could help. So home I went and straight to bed. Low and behold the doctor called me the following day and informed me my haemoglobin had dropped to 6.0. I was admitted straight away and given a blood transfusion and also another one 6 days later. It was also discovered my potasium had risen to 6.3 and also my platet count. I had various test including an ecg which was normal and also a colonoscopy and an endoscopy to rule out any internal bleeding which were also normal. As nothing serious was discovered I was discharge and refered back to my GP. I have had numerous blood test and each one shows a potassium level of 6ish. No one seems to give me any answers as to whether this is serious, why it is high or if it should be treated. I'm not taking any medication apart from my insulin. My GP has kept repeating the test incase the bottle of blood was left too long to be teasted or if the cells had got damaged when taking the sample which could affect the result (something along these lines!). Its now been 3months and I am still none the wiser. My last potassium test 3 days ago was 5.9. I am sorry if my story has gone on too long and I hope you manged to stay awakw to the end of it but I really don't have anyone else to ask, any advice would would be greatly appreciated. :?
Thanks

Well it sound's like you have been through the mill, sorry to hear that.

All I know about Potassium levels in the blood is that there are a number of things that can cause this. I had high Potassium and low Sodium at one point due to my Adrenal glands..It is usually Adrenal or Kidney function that causes it as far as I was aware , but certain medications can cause it aswell...Non steroid anti-inflam's can cause it and a few others I was told.

Did you have a bad Kindney infection??? These can cause terrible malaise and a very bad headaches.
Also Diabetic Keteacidosis can cause it, what was your control like?

It does sound like it is coming down ,which is a good thing and it took some time for mine to go back down and settle, at least you are being monitored by your GP now. I do hope you get to the bottom of what is wrong with you. You will have to ask him for some answers...Good luck.

My goodness, what a horrible few weeks.
This is a helpful webpage about high potassium levels
http://www.emedicinehealth.com/hyperkal ... cle_em.htm

It appears it can be caused by amongst other things: trauma, surgery, loss of red blood cells ,nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, (ie aspirin ,ibuprofen etc) and ACE inhibitors (ramipril) ... lots of possible causes that could have affected you
Also it says that false readings can be caused by the way the blood is taken. To me it looks as if you have several understandable reasons for having these higher levels and that your GP is keeping a good eye on it.

However, the headaches aren't necessarily related and if they are still concerning you you should make sure your doctor realises how much they're affecting you (don't think much of the hospital doctors response... there are headaches and headaches and he should have taken the rest of your history into account. :(

Sugar pie - how awful for you. I was diagnosed with hyperkalemia and hypercalcemia, turns out the blood pressure meds that I took at the time caused hyperkalemia, at the same time it was discoverd that my kidneys were not functioning properly, CKD stage 4. Too much calcium caused by tumour on the parathyroid gland. BG all over the place, never lower than 10.

My medication was changed, ECG showed no damage, was advised to eat low potassium, no oranges, avocado, pulses, nuts, potatoes soaked for an hour, drain, then boil in fresh water, vegetables boil for 10mins at least, YUK.
That is when I decided low carb worth a try, CKD improved to level 2, stayed at this level since 2009. Potassium levels in the normal range.

Calcium issues resolved by parathyroidectomy, this also sorted out my bp problems, I no longer need any more meds for that.
You say you are not taking any meds, your doctor will have checked your kidney function?

I hope you get better very soon, I scared myself to death when I googled hyperkalemia, hardly dare go to sleep any more in case I die!
But by the sounds of it, you are in good hands. :)

banana's, fake people,
I have been back to my GP this week and it has now been decided that all 20+ of my blood test results must have been affecte by the way the blood was taken or how it was handled in transit or the lab as all my kidney results came back normal. Should I ask to see a specialist who deals with this or just accept that they are right. What are the point of these test when they come back abnormal the doctors decide if they are or not. Surely there must be a way to take blood that give a more accurate result. Feeling very sad right now with them.
