Hi, just wondering if this is standard now. I used to see a consultant every 6 months. It been a while since I've had contact but that clinic was always super busy. Asked GP if I could be referred to a different not so good clinic, some contact is better than none in my eyes. GP response was 'If stable blood sugar levels then a lot of people with Type 1 diabetes are discharged from hospital care unless there are issues.' Is this normal now? I haven't had any communication regarding discharge

Am not in the UK, but here in Norway hospitals and consultants are currently under so much pressure regular hospital appointments/check ups are being more spread out. My ‘annual’ check up took 18 months to come through.
Eye checks and checks for neuropathy need to be done.. by someone.
I was confused about who had responsibility for renewing my prescriptions for insulin and ‘diabetic equipment’. I have now been told I need to see the local diabetic nurse ‘regularly’… and presumably she would be able to contact the GP or hospital consultant if she felt anything needed changing.
No idea what ‘regularly’ actually means.
UK has the NICE guidelines for the level of care patients can expect. I’m sure someone in here can ferret out those that are relevant for T1D’s.
I would be interested to know what has become or is becoming ‘common practice’ in the UK, for the care of those of us with type 1. I guess now that the use of CGM’s has become so ubiquitous individual T1D patients have been enabled to take control of their condition more easily.
Have often wondered what impact the use of CGM’s has had on the care of people with diabetes. Is there data about the number of hospital admissions for DKA and severe hypos for example?

I always refer people to read the NICE guidelines, they are an interesting read and the list of points show you really need to be seeing people with more expertise in diabetes than a GP. No type one should be denied a CGM. That has been the case now for a long while.

Thanks for that. I should have remembered those as I needed to use those in the past when I wanted to change insulin. I should have clarified i have had my CGM since the first lock down when rules changed locally.

Its funny this post should pop up as after years of looking after myself i need to change my insulin as it being discontinued.
I intend to see a specialist and further intend to see my GP who i expect to refer me.
When i had to fight for a CGM back in the day my GP was very supportive and sent a letter in advance to said specialist trying to help my cause.
I will let you know how things go..........

Most GPs know the basics of diabetes but thats it.
Whatever it is you need try asking your GP who may well then refer you if he doesn't have the answer?

Good luck

Tony
