Hi all.

Not looking for any explicit medical advise here and have booked an appointment with the nurse but it is in a month so might have to try and up that. Just an anecdoal what could this be? Anyway - pocket history. Type 2 initial readings very high, got things under control also very quickly with diet and exercise and things have been all good since. Hands up to admit that over the last 6 months or so i have been slacker than i should have been but not overly so. But, to the extent that when I tested my blood in the mornings it would be in the 7's generally. Not ideal and something I could unslack out of.

However. Last few days things have gone mental. Now just to preface I hadnt made any big lifestyle changes, didnt gorge a load of cake or anything but my morning readings jumped to the 9's. Heres the other thing. Historically, if i went for a walk (there is a particular one i do) and test after I would see a drop of about 1 point. But the other day i saw a 5 point drop when i did a test.

As an example of why i am so confused I had blood of about 6 last night before tea. Tea was chicken kebabs, so grilled chicken and vegetables with some non white rice (i forget the type). The only other thing i have had is some coffees but that is nothing new and i get a reading this morning of 9.3. WHY?

Anyway i dont know - thoughts?

Oh im on metformin 4 pills a day not sure how many milligrams but it was the max amount i could have when initially prescribed

Rice no matter what sort can push up sugar levels so I also learnt not too long ago, it doesnt matter the type or colour it is very high in carbs and can also be highly depending on what company produces it
you might also find what you thought was healthy is not always so for diabetes, another thig to avoid are grapes I was very surprised by this when it cause big sugar rises to me

Hi,

When you say you had your diabetes under control with diet and exercise what diet were you following? Is it possible that without realising you are eating more carbs than before? Maybe just slightly bigger portions?

Rice (of any type/colour) would certainly have that effect on me, as does bread, pasta, potatoes.

Did you test 2 hours after your meal to see if what you ate pushed your BG to high?

I replied here on my ipad but doesnt look like it came through - so now on a pc....

under control - meaning technically in remission according to the nurse. Basically followed a bunch of diabetic recipes, cut out anything explicitly sugary and daily exercise. Some of that stuff in the last 6 months or so has been less rigid. Hence when i say i could understand where the 7's came from and why- thats the reason.

It is the multiple 9's i am concerned with. Our diet is consistent nothing has specifically changed recently. If anything I have been more mindful than before.

I didn't test two hours after eating last night no. Looking up the rice post writing all this, it wasn't the most ideal under the circumstances however i am still surprised that it it would leave me with an effect 3 points higher than before eating over 10 hours later.

unfortunately now i am out of testing stripes so i will have to wait til i can get some more to look into this more.

Have you ever tried a libre? If not you should be able to get a free trial which would give you 15 days of information.

Yes, a bad meal the night before could do that to me, and looking at my libre I would have been even higher overnight.

Good idea to get testing strips and maybe do some intense testing & recording. So in your shoes I’d be testing right before eating & 2 hrs after each meal, recording all my food in a food diary or in an app - I use Myfitnesspal, looking for ideally a rise of no more than 2 & under 7.8 at the 2hr mark. I do set my personal goals lower than that though

I’d be avoiding snacking & I’d probably weigh any carbs - I don’t do this as all my carbs come from above ground veg so no potatoes, rice, pasta, flour or flour goods. I stick to less than 20g carb a day

Things can change and sometimes we need to tweak things further. As @Lakeslover says above a CGM May be useful but I’ve never used one so can’t comment further on that

No i haven't

this?
theres a free sample page 15 days here https://www.freestyle.abbott/uk-en/getting-started/sampling.html

you can also get a 10 day free trial for dexcomone cgm https://www.dexcom.com/en-GB/one-plus-campaign-sample?

cgms are very useful althou can be expensive but can offer a LOT of insight in how various foods impact your glucose levels. some foods may take longer than 2 hours to 'peak' at same token some other foods may 'peak' your sugar levels much quicker some for a longer and some for a shorter duration.

if there is any issues eg: sensor reading issues, inform which ever brand and they will send out a free replacement, same if happens to 'fall off' or knocked off (door jams... etc ) can be given replacements for that too :)

Well last i can check for a bit til the prescription for the strips updates... i had homemade spagboll sauce last night and a portion of noodles (dont ask - for some reason i thought that would be better than pasta). Anyway, two hours or so later bloods were 6.3.

Thanks for the advice everyone - i will be a bit more scientific method once the new box arrives. also have a think about getting a sensor too even just as a one off.

Well done, I thought past was not a good thing either but every one reacts differently
