Bad news. Complications in hospital stay.

I recently posted about no low carb options in hospital stay. Initially, it was meant to be 2 nights, so not a huge problem. Then a silent heart attack on recovering from surgery, so a bit longer. Then they discovered an extremely rare, lethal, and resistant fungal infection, so I have to stay in ICU at least 2 weeks for treatment.

I have to deal with the trauma of this development, but on top of this, 2 weeks on hospital food will be challenging. I have no-one local to bring food in (my husband died, tragically), so I tried ordering in, but the websites are blocked by hospital WiFi. Any ideas on how I can circumvent this? I recall someone posting that they ordered in from hospital. How?

So sorry for all your troubles @Rosie9876, a worrying time for you, I know this isn’t probably what you want to hear but sometimes we have to look at our health as a whole & the diabetes has to take a bit of a back seat, a couple of weeks eating a few more carbs won’t do much, if any damage. Your main aim is to get well enough to leave hospital. I’ve had occasions where I’ve had to put my keto diet on hold & eat a BRAT diet which is mainly bland white carbs & last time it was for nearly 3 months, yes it affected my HbA1c a little bit but once it was over & I got back on the wagon it soon came down again.

Maybe post your hospital menu here & we can give you some ideas? As to ordering in are you meaning takeaways? If so could you find one that you can call by phone rather than ordering on line? Sorry I can’t be of more help with this. Wishing you a speedy recovery

Thank you @lovinglife . Great comments. Unfortunately, after Xmas holidays, January was meant for "back on the wagon". I have to control my BS because if it goes too high, they won't administer anaesthetics for essential procedures.

In my previous post, I attached a menu for my previous hospital. Current menu a bit worse e.g. no plain yoghurt. Menu not very helpful because actual food doesn't resemble photo or description. It's all mostly carbs and gravy. The omelet option weird. I'm choosing salad and cheese and biscuits and apple or orange and picking off the rest.

Oh, that's really bad news! I hope that it will end soon and you will return home.

Do you have a mobile internet connection? You can turn off WiFi, connect to the mobile Internet and place an order through it.Mobile internet is usually expensive, but you don't need a lot of traffic. Or you can ask one of the staff (nurse/cleaner/etc) to order food for you.

I know some people would frown upon this option but you could always discuss going on a temporary sliding scale when in the hospital, it may make things easier all round. In fact I’m surprised that they haven’t suggested it already with your infection etc

This is a USA site but it explains it well if you don’t know about it

@Rosie9876 , sorry you are struggling with the stress of all this. ICU can be quite traumatic. I know, I have personal experience. Two weeks will seem like a lifetime, so the less stress you have the better. You are obviously under a lot of stress regarding the food offered.
The ICU departments generally have more staff, and often assign the same staff to individual patients, rather than have lots of changes. There are also volunteers. If you are in a position to be able to pay for your food, could you ask the hospital PALS team to get involved? Perhaps a click and collect type order could be picked up for you from a local shop?
Also, could you ask to have a dietician visit, and explain your dilemma to them? Despite their bad reputation, there are plenty who will consider individual food choices as well as the nutrition requirements for a particular individual’s health condition.

You are not kept in ICU for a trivial reason, so get the people responsible for your wellbeing and recovery involved and on your side. Hope you can relax a bit, and get well soon.

I have had to reluctantly make sacrifices and eat the most unpalatable food in hospital, just because I needed to show that I had a ‘normal appetite’ , whatever that is, and could tolerate solid food. Dry beefburger, and salad was bad enough. The pasta bake with tuna, more so.
My point being, I knew I had to compromise, in order to tick the boxes to get me out of there. Despite being unable to move about much, when in hospital, and taking a few weeks post- discharge from hospital the effect on my T2 management was negligible.

Thanks for suggestion, but it didn't work for some reason.

UPDATE: I had tried to order online from Waitrose but the hospital WiFi blocked this and other access to merchants. I just gave it a last ditch effort and it worked!!! I can only have a limited amount of prepared food - fridge space, etc - but it's to supplement hospital food some of the time. So I am a happy bunny.
