Hi all
Just to ask do you all have a diabetic nurse at your practice?

I don’t see a specialist nurse just the doctor.

I keep seeing posts relating helpful/unhelpful DNs. My GP gives me no guidance just wants me to discuss my ‘lifestyle’ and increase Metformin to another 500mg (2000mg daily). Been type 2 over 15 years.

Well until about march last year I HAD a great DBN, she said that she was the only one in my area. Sadly she went off sick last year and hasn’t returned ( I was in hope she’d get better and return. We had a great rapport, came from Upt North.
I have been reduced to seeing my GP as the other nurse who ‘practices’ diabetes checks I don’t see eye to eye with since she claimed I was uncontrolled etc and clearly did not read my notes.
My nurse had plans for my treatment and now ‍ The GP has put me on a 2nd drug and I’ve had to increase it but still I’ve no idea if it’s doing anything at all.
I saw an unknown GP yesterday to ‘review’ my results and the medication, useless waste of my time, no idea of my history.
I’d dearly love to find a professional DB nurse but where? I have a Consultant Endocrinologist but she was not impressed with that nurse either and I feel consultants like using a sledgehammer.


Now, I hope admin won’t object to me saying that ‘DiabetesUK’ have a BIG training seminar coming up for Professionals!!

Thank for discussing this. It’s really helpful. I
have used an AI and it gave me the same answer as you that Hba1c can be altered by anaemia. My dr is not open to these discussions. It’s an ongoing frustrating situation. As I have been anaemic off and on for all the time I have been diabetic. Numbers for haemoglobin are now up @ 121 normal is 115. However, there are two others linked to hb that are lower which he has read and classed as normal.
I’m seeing an advanced practice nurse and I will have this discussion. Experience tells me I will be seen as being awkward in not taking the extra 500mg. I’m upset and frustrated by the increase. Your input is gratefully received.

Get a referral to the diabetes climb at your local hospital?

I’ve actually just got home from seeing the Advanced nurse practitioner. No increase in Metformin PHEW!! Due to low iron. I will take this as I’m having more blood tests and possibly start supplements again to replenish iron stores.

My GP surgery has a diabetic nurse. I have only once had a telephone appointment with her. She was very knowledgeable and helpful. The contact was re obtaining the Abbott FreeStyle Libre2 Plus. My diabetic reviews are with nurses who have the bare minimum of Diebetic knowledge, they take bloods, weigh you and you are out of the door.

My GP surgery has a diabetic nurse. I have only once had a telephone appointment with her. She was very knowledgeable and helpful. The contact was re obtaining the Abbott FreeStyle Libre2 Plus. My diabetic reviews are with nurses who have the bare minimum of Diebetic knowledge, they take bloods, weigh you and you are out of the door.

My bloods, weight etc are done by a practice nurse, they maybe just trained to take bloods & weight, height etc no point in discussing anything with them as that’s basically their job. then get a text next day to say my results are back & to make an appointment with the DSN to discuss results

Have you heard of Haemochromatosis? It’s a Celtic genetic disorder affecting Herceptin in the liver. Affects Iron in the body. The body is unable to regulate the iron and it can build up in the organs of the body.
Well, some people can have issues with too much iron and not enough. Its a very common problem but not many are aware, just in case this might be useful to you.
