Omnipod and libre not working on holiday.

I am a type 1 diabetic with an omnipod 5 and libre 2 and they usually both work fine. I'm currently on holiday abroad and when I am in the sea/pool they keep losing connection and I am having to deactivate the pod as it no longer works. The libre is also stopping taking readings and is discarding itself. Has anyone else had similar issues or advice on what to do?

I’m not a pump user so I can’t help with that.

I do use the libre 2. I find it can stop working if it’s exposed to direct sunlight for too long, or if I’m swimming for too long. I think Abbott say it’s waterproof for 30 minutes. Has your libre stopped completely or can you manually scan it for a result? Do you have spares with you?

When you say is “discarding itself” do you mean it’s coming loose?

It has stopped working completely. It gave a message that said “No libre readings. Libre is discarding itself for your safety “ and then stopped working.

Maybe I should just make sure to leave the pool every 30 mins and see if that helps?

I had this exact same problem during the early July summer heatwave in the uk whilst I was in holiday in Cornwall. Very frustrating and disruptive when you are trying to relax on your well earned holiday.

It seemed to do it when I had the libre totally out in the sun. Eg on the beach with no shade. I googled it and ai said the plastic disc itself can quickly heat up and cut out.

I didn’t have the “discarding” message, just the loss of connection to my pod issue so the omnipod would keep flipping into limited mode and then reducing basal and then my sugars would go up.

I tried to go find shade and found that consistently it regained connection after about 50 minutes. It did it a least once every day. During the” limited mode” periods I’d just put it on a temp basal until it came back (monitoring with finger pricks if necessary). Then I’d go back into automated mode as soon as I could.

It was a total faff but saved all the hassle of changing the sensor or the pod ahead of time and wasting vital stocks.

After sussing out what cured it I stopped stressing because I knew it would reconnect once it had cooled down.

Thank you so much! This is very helpful and also useful to know that it isn’t just me. I have been having a similar issue with the limited mode so will try manual and a temp basal. Hopefully if I try and have regular shade breaks it will sort itself out!
