Hi all,

My GP has referred me to specialist diabetic nurse following an increase in levels. I went today and she suggested taking me off gliclazide and going onto either Byetta or Victoza. My next appointment is in February and she said go away and have a look at them both. Any thoughts and/or experiences welcome.

I know Byetta did it for a couple of friends of mine of different sexes. They both swear by it but, I have no experience.

Hi Frazer,

Why is she taking you off gliclazide? I was on it for about 5 years or so, and spent my whole life eating or not eating merely to maintain proper blood levels. Key problem was too many very low values verging on hypo. Also, I couldn't have carbs after about 8pm when gliclazide seemed not to work without accompanying exercise like a walk. Then I had myself referred to a specialist who told my GP to put me on Metformin. This seems to be working OK and I can now dine out on evenings with friends. The downside is that for me, metformin does not have the immediate effect that gliclazide has for dealing with spikes that appear out of nowhere and for no understandable reason! I'm going to go back and ask for some gliclazide as backup for use as and when.

Good luck.
