Hello everyone,

I've been reading the forum for month's and finally decided to post a few Question's.

I'll try explain easy :) I do a range of exercise classes including a HIT functional strength, Boxercise, Spin, Kettlebell along with my own weight work. I'm a 26yr old male average build Type 1 for 10yrs. I do workout's always in the evening 6pm-9pm.
I usually include a 20min fast walk or cycle in each workout.

My routine is I generally have my sugars high (8-15) when beginning my work outs to ensure I make it through. I sometime's eat a high carb meal a couple of hours before starting as-well.

I have found that I usually make it through the workout without any hypo's or even symptoms of low sugars (I normally begin to 'feel' low when below 4)

A need a little advice & help needed:

Why can I sometimes do test's during a workout and find I have readings of less than 4 & yet feel fine...?

I get home, watch tv; do a test before bed ( it reads 4-7 ) and I got to sleep, Why do I wake up with levels in the 20's?

Thanks

Hypo symptoms are caused by adrenaline release and as exercise also triggers an adrenaline response, exercise can and does "hide" hypo symptoms due to the fact that the adrenaline (Epinephrine) is already in the system.

Secondly, what do you eat post workout, if anything? When do you take you basal insulin? Typically what does your meal ahead of your work out consist of? It is probably not the exercise that causes the high, but without further info, it's hard to give advice on that!

Thanks for your response.

It is hard to answer as im not someone who counts carbs or eats very similar foods every day.

Post workout I don't always eat something depending on sugar level before bed but can have a small low carb & sugar protein shake. (Which I know would raise levels during the night)

Basal insulin: I have 22 units each morning

Bolus insulin: Varies upon what im eating at that meal and what my current reading is.

I try not to inject close to workout times so that nothing is going 'kick in' in that time frame.

Before workouts an example meal would be: chicken steak + chips , burger potatoes and packet of veg , 3 cheese on toasts...

Regards

Justin

@bonus - What happens when you don't exercise before bed?

The reason I ask about what you eat before your workout is that, if you are eating a high carb meal, such as pasta with a meat sauce, or rice and a sauce, there is a strong probability that you are seeing the "pizza effect" occurring where fats may slow the release of the carbs.

In addition, with your basal being injected in the morning, there is also a possibility that your basal is basically being used up ahead of you waking.

Throw in the possibility of dawn phenomenon on top of that, and there are three reasons why you may be seeing a greater rise post exercise as they all work together.

I'm afraid that's why we ask so many questions!

I love the more questions! It gives more answers!

I only have the Basal in morning as ive found with Lantus it seems to have finished working in me after just a few hours.

Does anyone else find this with Lantus - It seems to just suddenly kick in and lower the sugars after 4.30hrs

Yes my levels are very variable but at my yearly check up my Hba1c always seems to be ok. Regarding carb counting I guess ive just found it a bit of 'pain in the bum' having to weigh/measure foods all the time so try to estimate food to bolus amount required (Not the best way I know )

In the past couple of weeks I have changed to injecting in my stomach area as I always used to inject on my thighs/hips and my Diabetes Specialist said my thighs were getting rather hard/swollen not muscled but due to insulin - Probably fat build up?
Hopefully not injecting in my thighs/legs will change this...
