Where can I get help

I am new to this forum. I have had type 2 diabetes for about 5 years now. I take Metformin, 2000mg a day, to control my blood glucose. For the last two months my strip tests have been steadily rising. In the morning my blood sugar is around 20 mmol/l and rises to around 26mmol/l by late evening. I recently had some blood tests (including HbA1c) and they showed a high value. They also revealed abnormally high RBC.

My doctor advised me to see the practice lead diabetes specialist. Unfortunately, he is on holiday for three weeks and I can't see the practise diabetic nurse for another month.

These blood glucose levels make me feel as if I have been hit by a train.

Can anyone tell me what is a safe level of blood sugar and if I should be seeking help before my doctor returns from holiday.

Hi, welcome to the forum

At 26 you are dangerously high and should really go to the hospital, A&E, but tell what do you eat, write down a typical days menu, lets see what we can suggest.

It's always wise to ask your doctor for help. mostly, they try, but some are not actually very knowledgeable

as for your BG questions.
a non- diabetic BG is at around 5mmol/l at all times, mostly slightly under that. If it deviates, it goes back very quickly, generally within an hour or two. The numbers you give are FAR TOO HIGH and into the danger zone. That amount of glucose circulating through micro blood-vessels is doing damage, particularly to your retinas and kidneys.
If Metformin isn't enough to keep you in the safe zone, you have essentially 2 options:
1) change your medication
2) change your diet.
I personally find a reduced carbohydrate diet is better than taking loads of medication. It doesn't have nasty side effects.
If you feel this is the way forward for you, read the "stickies" which explain it and look at the success stories thread.
If you then have specific questions, Come back and we'll find someone who can answer them for you.

I do not eat anything for breakfast or lunch. I have a light meal at teatime (typically cheese, pasta, fish). My only extravagance is early evening when I have toast + honey and an occasional cream cake.

Pasta, toast and honey (my word!!! Just reading about this makes me spike and I havent done so in the past few years), you need to cut these out for sure, you can get low carb bread and lower carb pasta but the honey is just pure sugar.
if that is all that you are eating you are missing out on a whole load of very important nutrients there, you need to have a serious re-think, you are not getting your vitamins, minerals and fibre, probably not enough protein either.

Why are you missing out on lunch and breakfast, do you test your bg and if so how often?
