    Eye complications

Hi Rhian I had my annual eye screening, who referred me to my local hospital for an appointment which was about three weeks after the screening. I had that appointment about a week ago, and they referred me for 3 x laser eye treatments for my right eye (one month apart) starting in a couple of...

What was your fasting blood glucose? (with some chat)

7.2 this morning. Not as good as yesterday, but good on average. I still worry about hypos with my insulin (which I have just started taking again) so am reluctant to inject as much as I need to sometimes. I did go down to 4 yesterday (during the day), which makes me feel ill, and can't...

    A bit confused

Thanks. Sorry to hear about your cat! I am not sure how much my pancreas is damaged, but I take on board what you say. Someone very close to me has similar scarring issues on her heart, and it plays havoc on our lives, hence I live daily with how scar tissue can effect organs - I just never...

An amylase (/ˈæmɪleɪz/) is an enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of starch (Latin amylum) into sugars. Amylase is present in the saliva of humans and some other mammals, where it begins the chemical process of digestion. What does it mean when your amylase is high? High amylase levels are...

Good luck. I hope you get it sorted. The amylase test was the simple blood test that got the docs on the right track for me.

    A bit confused

I understand that pancreatic cancer is one of the worst you can get (or do they say that about all cancers...). If I remember right on my second episode (about six years ago), they did wonder about cancer at the time, and did some tests which luckily for me were ok. I do get the occassional pain...

    A bit confused

Thanks for your reply. I think the one thing that confuses me most is whether my body is doing something for a reason, or it is doing it because it is broken. I wonder if sometimes the GP etc doesn't know best, and the body does, and the body is trying to do something to make something better...

    A bit confused

Hey. I am sorry you have had such bad problems. RE Pancreatitis, both times the pain was so bad that I had to have morphine on a drip for a week or so. When the events happened, initially I could only lay on the floor and could not get up before I was taken to hospital. My blood pressure went...

    A bit confused

Thanks for your comments. That's two people that have said that, so I must listen I guess. With regards to becoming fitter / losing weight against reducing meds - it seems like a chicken / egg in my head. I am not sure which should come first. Stop the meds to make it easier for my body to...

    A bit confused

Thank you for taking the time to comment. My ketones are between 2 and 4, mostly between 3 and 3.5 - I test once a day at different times. I note that between 3 and 5 is seen as Starvation Ketones, and I am eating enough to be not starving, so maybe this might mean that my insulin isn't allowing...

    A bit confused

I am a type 2 diabetic. Have been for 12ish years. My HBA1C for the last 10 years have been > 100. Very last one was 95, so moving in the right direction but a long way from where I want to be. I have had 2 episodes of pancreatitis, one 9 years ago, one 6 years ago. 6 years ago I nearly died...

Type 2s: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning? (very low chat level)

5.9 today. Before this month I would usually be above 10, many times I would be above 17 and sometimes above 20. It seems that over the last 4 weeks I am really turning things around.

Why the opposition to low carb?

My understanding is that fructose and glucose are quite different, and are matabolised differently. Fructose is more likely to be turned into fat than glucose, and less likely to raise blood sugar as much as glucose. Fruit usually contains both glucose and fructose.

    amputation

This is probably a niave comment, but would treating a wound that won't heal because blood sugar is too high with a form of sugar a good idea?

Artificially sweetened drinks may not be so health promoting, study suggests

I am an on / off low carber, and have been for many years. I have found recently, that my off times where I haven't been able to get back on the wagon could be linked to drinking fizzy drinks - mostly diet coke or pepsi max, but sometimes sugar free orangeade, cherryade etc. When I stick to...

Such a thing as low carb bread or snack bars?

I bought livlife low carb bread from waitrose a couple of days ago. 3.8g of carbs per slice, and it seems to do the trick.

Has anyone else seen this 'Appalling' type 2 diabetes advert?

Kids that are constantly unhealthy snacks might develop problems in later life, including type 2 diabetes, infertility and obesity. Isn't this true? I am a type 3c diabetic, started off as type 2, then had a couple of bouts of pancreatitis which have reduced my insulin production, my mother in...

Surgery trying to put me on Statins... Again!

I agree. I found that the problem for me is that more insulin drives me to have huge carb cravings, and apparently if you don't satisfy these cravings then your metabolism slows down. This is why I have stopped my glic and then my insulin and lost my cravings. Since stopping insulin 5 weeks ago...
