    Hypo. Adult son being aggressive

Hi Cookiesmum Your son is on a really old-fashioned regime. When I used to be on a Novomix I had frequent hypos too. He is young and active and should really be on at least a basal/bolus regime or a pump. Try and get him a referral to a diabetologist if he's not seeing one already. GPs and...

    Other than Lucozade

I'm gluten free and I use M&S foam shrimps and bananas when I am having a hypo. They come in little packets (3 packets for £1) so perfect for carrying around in your bag and they are gluten free. They taste a lot nicer than glucotabs too! I think your dentist will have to understand that hypos...

Gp won't send me for OGTT

Yeah - if it were me I'd try the DIY Lucozade option and spend the rest of the money on something nice!!

    Fasting blood tests

Try and get the earliest appointment going so he can eat straight after. It might be helpful if he had someone who could drive him to the fasting blood test appointment so he would feel less worried about going hypo. Could you or someone else offer to go with him? That might reassure him that...

Gp won't send me for OGTT

If you're really desperate to know then you can order OGTT, insulin levels, C-peptide etc. from Medichecks (google it - we aren't allowed to put links on this forum). You don't need a doctor's request and they send the results to you. However they charge a lot for the tests. You could try the...

Type 1 and working in a too hot office! HELP!

I wouldn't be able to work in an office like that - it sounds very unpleasant. If your boss isn't prepared to budge then perhaps you should make your own adjustments. You could buy a desk fan or alternatively on Amazon they have some portable air conditioners. You shouldn't have to do that but...

GPs control of most of the NHS budget by 2013

Personally I don't see moving services into the community as a "good thing". I think it leads to a dumbing down of patient care. I have some complicated endocrine problems and a practice nurse simply doesn't have the knowledge to deal with them. The GPs also lack specialist training in...

GPs control of most of the NHS budget by 2013

I got an email from diabetes.co.uk today that mentioned this thread as a hot issue - so perhaps that's why people are choosing to post on this topic today!! I have to say - I don't think this is necessarily a party political issue as Labour went some way to opening up the NHS toward...

Is your Diabetes care from a GP or hospital? TYPE 1 ONLY

Hi guys Thanks to everyone who has posted so far - adults, children - anyone who is a Type 1 is welcome to answer the poll. I don't mind about type 2s who have posted - it was my (wrong!) assumption that only Type 1s got to go to the hospitals so I didn't know if my question applied to anyone...

    Insulin Prescriptions

How strange - do you live in a crime-ridden area populated by theiving Type 1 diabetics?? :D My GP lets me order what I need when I need it. I would write to the practice manager and complain. I understand that GPs are keen to prevent wastage of medications - but as a Type 1 it's not...

Is your Diabetes care from a GP or hospital? TYPE 1 ONLY

I would like to know where most Type 1s get their diabetes care? There is a move in my area for all type 1s to be seen at GP surgeries only (unless they have a pump). In the case of my GP surgery - this means only seeing a practice nurse once a year for a very basic assessment. I feel this...

    Retinopathy Screening

Hi Joel I would advise ringing up the screening centre (use the phone number on your letter) and asking to speak to one of the screeners as they will be best placed to go through your files and tell you what's been found. I did this the other day and got lots of information from the screener...

GPs control of most of the NHS budget by 2013

Diabetes UK have started a campaign against the reforms too as they think the NHS reforms will be detrimental to diabetes care. You can check out their campaigns webpage for more information http://www.diabetes.org.uk/Get_involved/Campaigning/

GPs control of most of the NHS budget by 2013

I think the reforms are a very bad idea and they are not supported by the majority of hospital doctors or GPs. The reforms open up the way to further privatization of the NHS, which in the long term will be bad news for us diabetics. You only have to look at what happens in the US where people...

No energy and finding life hard.

You say your thryoid has been checked and it is fine, but did you get the actual numbers for your TSH, FT4 and FT3? What doctors think is 'fine' for thyroid can very often be pathological. You can't necessarily rely on doctors to treat your thyroid properly and thyroid is a major cause of...

Help - accidentally took too much levemir

Thanks ebony321 and Snodger for your replies I was very worried after I took the wrong amount but so far things have been fine - with no hypos. I'm just doing regular checks. Snodger I can't believe you took 3x 18 units of long-acting!! That must have been a terrible night!!

Help - accidentally took too much levemir

I normally take 11 units at bed and 4 units of levemir around 11am. Today I took 11 units in the morning by accident. So I had 11 units last night and 11 units this morning. This is 7 units over my normal dose. I am not sure what to do as this is the first time I have misdosed my basal insulin...

ACCORD - tight control equals higher mortality rates

New article in GPPulse magazine today says that tighter control ie Hba1c of 6% or lower increased 5 year mortality by 19% in Type 2s. What do you think the reasons could be for this? I thought that having tighter control was supposed to improve diabetic complications etc...

What's the difference between DKA and hyperglycaemia?

Thanks Sophia - that's helpful information. I checked for ketones and they are negative so I think it's just hyperglycaemia due to insufficient insulin!
