    Newly diagnosed Type 1

Hi, Joe. You are going to be scared, confused, depressed some of the time. It's a tricky disease. Normal life? Hmmmmm. Kind of. I spend a lot of energy checking my BS, but I try hard not to let it diminish my life. In fact, you and I both knocked on heaven's door in the ICU, so I'm bound...

Type 1 Hypo at night despite snack

What worked for me (at least for now) was slowly reducing my basal, taking it in the morning, changing my carb ratio at dinner so that I took less bolus, and I continue to have a night snack. I like yogurt with chopped nuts, or a cup of high protein cereal with almond milk. Good luck to both...

    Clotted cream.

No reason at all, I guess unless you have to watch your cholesterol. Adore clotted cream!

    Question for Tresiba users

Funny you should bring this up. Been on Tresiba for a few weeks (accidentally, b/c I forgot it was Toujeo I'd taken before; duh) to try to cut down on hypo's. Tried it at night, switched back to morning (same as you, it's easier to remember--also read that it peaks @ nine hours). I'm not...

    English Breakfast?

That's what I was thinking--fried bread, yes; grilled tomato, yes; never noticed a hash brown on my plate in the UK, but then, times change.

    I've just done something stupid.

Can't begin to tell you how hungry this is making me. There is nothing like an English breakfast, IMHO.

    Food Order Study

Thanks, I'll try that. Anyway, my first attempt was a failure; I'll try again if I can remember.

Stupid weather messing with insulin sensitivity

You can say that again, Scot from Scotland. In my little life, I almost never run across fellow T1's. Thank you, Internet!

Stupid weather messing with insulin sensitivity

I feel like my numbers have been high due to the heat wave. Read that sunburn causes stress that can cause a rise in bg, but nothing about heat in general. Anyway, switched basal to Tresiba from Lantus and changed the timing to bedtime from early morning and it seems to be working! Back in my...

    Food Order Study

Hello. I just read about a recent Cornell Medical College study involving using food order to decrease post meal glucose levels. They found that eating carbs last during a meal made a huge difference. Wondering if anyone has tried this. If it works, I don't mind taking apart my sandwich...

    Has anyone had this happen?

I've been type 1 for two years, and have been expecting this to happen, but not yet! Used to check BS in the restrooms, but that was horrible and disgusting, and quite the balancing act. Now I have a Dexcom so that's not an issue. When I inject at the table in a restaurant, I'm usually...

Scared to put in sensor. Frustrated with type 1

Rachel, not sure if you were stressed about the mechanics of replacing your sensor. If so, I can relate to that, having sweated through sensor replacement many times. I became good friends with the techies at Dexcom--lol. As far as being reminded too much of your BS levels, I agree that can...

What have you eaten today? (Low carb forum)

One half banana nut muffin with a fried egg, salad, four 3 carb crackers with soft cheese and egg salad. Not hungry today.

Just love that you said, "fab". Made me smile.

Yeah, I had a grenade today. Though my insulin was rotten. LOL.

explaining what it's really like to live with Type 1

I read this somewhere, so forgive my stealing, but having type one is really just living and trying hard not to die. But I think the near death experience a lot of us have had when first developing the disease has changed me. I think most of my (unconscious) motivation in life is to enjoy it...

Type 1: What are your HbA1c test results?

Just took a home test and scored 6.8. So happy b/c blood sugar as been up all day, around 200, for no apparent reason despite injecting every two hours and exercising. I even switched bolus from Hunolog to Novolog. who knows. Type 1 is a mystery. Previous A1C was 7.2.

Who is troubled by injecting in public? Just me?

Well, I just had the lovely experience of checking my blood sugar with a meter on a plane next to a stranger. Not sure, but had the feeling he was not pleased or entertained. Doing this, of course, is harder than injecting, which I do pretty quickly and, of course, through my clothes in public...

Porridge - good or bad for breakfast

Sadly, had to give it up and I used to eat it almost every day. Sends my BS to the moon. Try peanut butter and low sugar jam on toast for feeling full.

I keep thinking back to how close I was to dying from a disease I didn't know I had.

Bob, I enjoyed reading your detailed and very relatable description of your journey. Sounds a lot like my onset, almost two years ago. Blood sugar was above 800, like yours. Was so dehydrated I felt like my lips were turned inside out. All food in the hospital turned into paste in my mouth...
