Blood Glucose Test Strips Refused by GP

The counties are not the same as the PCTs so it is the PCTs that need to be listed as each county contains several PCTs and they will differ. I'm in east lancs PCT and get what I need in terms of strips and needles and I am diet controlled - I couldn't keep track of what is /is not effective if...

    Bread!!!

When I'm feeling naughty at the weekend I swap the porridge for a croissant and it's fine! Saturday was 6.4 before and 6.6 after!!! I try to avoid the bread during the week though unless it is one slice with a salad lunch so maybe it is the one off indulgence issue that keeps it OK.

omg just started having porridge and blood sugars rocketed

Re: omg just started having porridge and blood sugars rocket I do hazel nuts, almonds, cashews & walnuts mostly. I have to watch them as they can burn very quickly. Also try pumpkin, sesame & sunflower seeds - great nutty flavours when roasted.

What was the most extreme reaction????????

some have been odd! A nursing friends who said 'Oh dear no, how will you manage?' to relatives who have said 'well your grandfather died of it at 54' (he was T1 and I'm T2 & 47) so not very cheerful but my grandmother was T2 and lived to be 92! and some colleagues have said - 'but your not...

    lack of hospital care

Just an update, I had my surgery in Feb which was fine but had several complications afterwards (not diabetes related). Generally the care was good and the nurses were great but they were not too sure about doing the BGs, I soon found out why. Unfortunately I couldn't eat for 5 days and was...

Partner not listening at all - worried

Hello NMrs, Just a thought, lots of GP surgeries now have a practice nurse or district nurse who is the teams diabetes specialist and monitors the diabetic patients rather than the GP. It might be useful to call the practice receptionist to find out. I am very lucky, my nurse has an 'open...

Partner not listening at all - worried

Hi, I've found having 20g of dried fruit and nuts a real substitute and useful for the mid-morning munchies. Alternating the types and dry roasting the nuts I like gives variety. Likewise dry roasting seeds makes gives them a nutty flavour and their great on salads to give different flavours...

Thanks Cuglia and Noblehead I now understand :D It's great what you learn from here, so much more than from the HCPs. :)

    Hypo Info?

This sounds familiar but did not think it was a hypo at the time. About 4 weeks ago I had a fasting Bg of 6.9 and post breaky bg of 8.6 so went for a walk, 2 hours later walking in the snow I felt really cold, shivery and couldn't concentrate on the conversation with friends. Did a bg and it...

    Really annoyed!

Hi all, I have been given the test strips from day 1 (7 weeks ago). The diabetic nurse advised me to monitor the bgs and not worry about the diet thing for the first week. This gave me a chance to see what happened on my normal diet. I then had a week monitoring Bgs and recording the carbs and I...

    lack of hospital care

Only good things to say! I was diagnosed T2 the morning I was having surgery - Dec 1st. The nurses were great on the ward but surgery was cancelled and I was advised to see my GP the next day which I did. That week I also read up as much as I could and found this website, bought the carbs and...

    Trying to lose weight?

Thanks everyone, I do cook everything including lots more veg and fruit, often well over the 5 a day, but just not used to it all yet ... and cooking = dipping in! And not making the rest of the family change too much as well. Oh well, portion control will get easier I guess - I have the carbs...

    Trying to lose weight?

Hi, I'm trying to drink 2 litres of water a day on top of my usual 5 or 6 teas a day. The glass before a meal trick is I find a useful hunger suppressant as it fills you up. But you do spend a lot of time in the loo! My main problem is reducing the carbs to an effective level to suit my...

Breakfast for cold weather - brrrr!

I have the Quaker oats with a hand full of dried fruits - cranberries, blueberries, saltanas etc which make it sweeter and tasty without the syrup and cream I used to enjoy! I also use half semi skimmed and half water to reduce the calories! Makes going out a pleasure first thing!

    High reading?

If it works I guess the process is irrelevant - so I'll try the advice. Never been good at having the 2 litres of H2O a day though - due to the consequences of spending too much time on the loo!

    New diagnosis and Christmas!

Thanks for that, I thought it was something special that I was missing but I use it all the time!

    High reading?

I find exercise helps more than anything; the Wii has taken a bashing every day mon-fri for an hour. I am intrigued by the idea of drinking water, how does that work Cuglia?
