Christmas food - what's your favourite d-friendly snacks/treats for the holiday season?

I have ditchthecarbs and dietdoctor pinned to the top of my screen. Both have lots of recipes for snack type treats, but I would go with the list of snacks by @JoKalsbeek. Cheese does not have to be cheddar, brie or stilton from the supermarket and even they are beginning to stock a wider range...

Type 2 and Metformin side affects.

Do you have a meter? It is well worth the investment, it lets you know what is going on with your bg levels with different meals then you can narrow it down to specific foods. For 3 months I followed the advice given by the DN - porridge for breakfast, wholewheat bread, lots of veg, wholewheat...

    Diabetic Nurses - Discuss

My DN and I took agin each other at the first meeting. 1) I must be eating lots of biscuits, cakes and desserts, drinking fizzy pop, not enough veg, wholemeal pasta, baked potatoes etc. I had been following the low fat, 5 portions of veg a day for years. No more than one pack of biscuits a week...

    Bubble burst

At least you were advised to test and your readings have dropped. View it more as a process of refinement. Now you will be testing before and after meals to find which foods specifically are raising your readings. I strongly suspect that the toast with the bacon and egg was mainly to blame for...

Type 2 Problems with skin healing

Have you tried SBC propolis range? Propolis is used by honey bees to keep the hive free of fungus and bacteria. It smells of honey, so probably not for liberal use during the summer but it helps to keep skin clean provided it is not broken.

Got my second results back...diagnosed Type 2

@Starshine as a state registered nurse you probably know more about diabetes than the average GP, particularly now that you have joined our ranks. You understand the shock of diagnosis, the denial, the sadness, the fear of needles and testing, the bewilderment over conflicting advice and the...

    Achieved Remission Today !

Well done. Keep an eye on the 'little treats', they have a habit of gradually becoming more frequent or bigger.

    Type 2 new diagnosis

Hi @Arber welcome to the forum. You need to know what you are dealing with, are you just tipping over into diabetic (Hba1c reading close to 6.6) or are you well into the diabetic range (double figures). When your meter arrives start to use it and record the results, I used a simple spreadsheet...

About Dodgy Blood and Meter Accuracy.

What I find worrying is that the finger prick test is fine for T1 to use for working out how much insulin to inject beyond their basal yet it is not accurate for T2 - only an HbA1c test is regarded as being of sufficient accuracy, regardless of the margin of error inherent in testing or if the...

Aseem Malhotra. Are prescription drugs a waste of time?

Sometimes it is a question of confidence. Some people spend a lifetime in work which not only does not challenge them to think but actively discourages thinking. For them to challenge a professional in a position of power takes courage. In my position I was diagnosed on an HBA1c of 6.6, just...

Aseem Malhotra. Are prescription drugs a waste of time?

Interesting that the onus is being put back on the individual to 'do the research'. I appreciate that many people go to their GP expecting that there is a 'pill for everything' and that somehow they have failed if they do not come out with a prescription, but GPs also need to keep themselves up...

    Sugar levels decreasing

Don't stop taking the medication, as you say it is early days at the moment and your bg levels need to come down a bit more before your health care team will consider reducing the medication. Diabetes is a long game, it will not be rushed and we have to learn patience. The dietician will...

    New HBa1c Result...Not good.

Others will be along who know more about the ratios of LDL and HDL than me. Just want to ask are you testing 2 hours after eating to see how what eat is affecting your bg levels? You may find that the creep of 'treats' has started a rise in bg. I find that the prospect of testing more times...

    Need motivation!!!

Have you tried making your own crisps from different veg? Preferably those with fewer carbs than potatoes. Try some high percentage chocolate - 85% or more, most supermarkets have some. The important thing is to test after eating, I could not eat bread of any kind nor most fruit. The choice was...

    Extreme chocolate

With a few spoons of natural full fat Greek style yoghurt makes a filling breakfast/dessert.

    Swollen legs and feet

Heat affects my feet and lower legs, making the skin tight and uncomfortable even under my feet. I have found that reducing my carb intake has made a huge difference and this summer they were not noticeably swollen even on the hottest days.

    Need motivation!!!

Do you keep a food diary? I found having to test two hours after eating every time was also a great way to stop snacking. Combined it helps to work out which foods are troublesome for you. Once you have started to get that under your belt decide where you want to be by Christmas, set a target...

Can I get better with work? Or is it too late?

Definitely you can deal with the raised insulin levels, you have a doctor who is really on the ball so hang onto them. Keep up the exercise and drop as many carbs as you can and you will at least delay if not avoid T2. Remember life is for living so the occasional slip will not do harm but you...

First week of low carb low cal almost done

Each day is a new day and a fresh start. Take each day as it comes, then count the good days over a longer period of time. There will be times when you think you are doing everything right but it does not bring down your bg, others when you are surprised that you 'got away' with more carbs in a...

    Newly diagnosed

Usually it takes two tests three months apart for a diagnosis of diabetes to be confirmed. To know what is going on with your bg levels in between three/six monthly tests you need to buy a meter. Have a look in the shop and choose one that has cheaper strips because they are the on going cost...
