Type 1 - Lots of hypos

Hi Acron^, Welcome to the forum. How many units of your pre-mix are you having? Quite often when diagnosed Type 1 you have whats called a "honeymoon" period where the pancreas after being given some "help" with injected insulin, start to get very productive by itself. This is maybe what's...

    Carbs to Insulin !!

Lilibet, Divide 500 by total units of insulin (10). This would give you 50g cho per unit of insulin. If you are low carbing and say only want 10g cho in a meal then you would need a pen that did 1/5th of a unit. Caitycakes x

    Advice required

Hi, I'm type 1, diagnosed 3 months ago and I am 45, so yes it's possible. When I was diagnosed, the doctor at the hospital told me that they are seeing an increase in type 1 in the over 40's. I was totally unaware I could be type one at my age. I thought you only got type 1 when you were...

    Carbs to Insulin !!

Thanks for explaining the 500 rule. It has given me a good idea of why my DSN thinks the transition from a pre-mix to basal/bolus might be tricky for me. I only take 1/2 unit of premix in morning and 5 in the evening and I do low carb, so I would imagine that unless pens come in 1/10th...

    "Emergency" rations?

Yep, I learned the hard way also. Had three hypos in one day. Apparently the "working life" of dextrose tabs is about 45mins and if you don't back up with carbs you crash right back down again. Then it's like being a "bouncing ball" correcting and dropping unless you have slow release carbs...

    THIS MORNING

Yep, I watched it too. What happened to the chef? Also noticed there was no mention of the increase in the over 40's being diagnosed with type 1. Disappointingly brief. Though maybe it will come back on later in the programme. caitycakes x

    Eye Screening

Thanks Sue, I had been planning on going myself in the car, so I'm glad you mentioned about not driving after pupils dilated. Caitycakes x

    Eye Screening

Hi all, Got to go on Wed for my eye screening test. Can anyone tell me how long it takes? Don't know about anyone else but I find appointments and tests more hassle than the diabetes! I know it's important and I will definitely be going but would like an idea of what to expect and how long...

    Blood sugar still high

Hi, The "eat plenty of complex carbohydrates" advice is what everyone gets told on diagnosis. Fortunately, this forum exists. Have a read of some of the low carb threads on here and learn how you can reduce your blood glucose levels by reducing your carb intake. I followed the standard...

    "Emergency" rations?

Hi Hana, That's what I love about this forum. You learn new things all the time. I was always told that once you corrected your BG with dextrose tabs that you had to then have some small carbs to stop you dropping quickly back down again. Could I have been given this advice because I'm on...

    Blood sugar still high

It probably would make a big difference, but no-one wants to be deprived so try drinking beers which have been brewed longer. I think the pilsner beers are good for that but check. When they are brewed longer it means that most of the sugar turns to alcohol. They also have a higher alcohol...

    "Emergency" rations?

Hello, Dextrose tablets are for when you have a hypo. When you have taken them you need to have some carbs afterwards. As hana says, oatcakes are perfect for this purpose. If it's just that you want some ideas of what to carry around as a snack then perhaps you could carry an apple or some...

Hi emac, Can't really comment on whether you would be type 1 or 2 so test results will tell. What do you drink? Caitycakes x

    Still unwell and Scunnered!

Lilibet, Please don't go out and but strips yourself, they cost a fortune. You are type 1, and should be able to get the amount of strips you feel you need to keep on top of things. Go to docs and get them to change your prescription to the amount you would like. I get 200 per month and am...

    Net Carbs

Well my chocolate microwave cake came from Low Carb Megastore and was duly "nuked". I decided to have a "tried and tested" evening meal so that I could be fairly sure of the effect of the cake. Had a good sized chunk liberally covered with cream. EEEEEEEEkkkkkkk! My 2hr pp test is 8.7. LOW...
