    At my wits end

I took lots of things out of the cupboards and have hidden them in my bedroom! I can sympathise with the brain dead feeling, my daughter has had a cold since Thurs night so i have been getting up to test and correct every 2 hours at night ever since. It is hard work and i'm not looking forward...

    At my wits end

Oh Maz, i really feel for you hun [hugs] I can sort of understand how you feel as i am a single mum too, no family around to help, friends don't understand. I have 3 girls and it is my middle one who is diabetic, she is coming up to 13, does her blood tests and insulin when told but if not told...

    Sad start to 2013!

Sorry to hear you felt sad Blondie I was up every 2 hours last night testing and correcting because my daughter has a cold, that was the 5th night in a row so far, to me it was just like any other night, just normal life with a diabetic child  I can sympathise with the stupid comments...

my 3 year old just been diagnosed

Tracy, i did the same cut down on the fruit! My daughter never has fruit as a snack but an apple or grapes tagged onto the end of lunch or dinner doesn't cause too much of a problem because the other foods slow down the absorption. The best fruits to avoid big spikes are berries, strawberries...

my 3 year old just been diagnosed

How you are feeling is completely normal, i was the same when my daughter was diagnosed at age 9. Her blood glucose was over 45 on hospital admission and her 1st Hba1c was 15.something! Hba1c measures the levels of blood glucose over the previous 2-3 months. You will understand what he needs...

One giant leap for Riri - used dual wave for 1st time

Don't apologise Riri, we will get there in the end! I've got advanced pump training with the Roche rep tomorrow so hoping to find out about these problem foods. Extending for an hour to cover chocolate didn't work, 6.8 before eating, 10.0 after 2 hours and 10.0 after 3 hours with no lows...

    ketones question

Sorry to hear your daughter is poorly. When my daughter is ill and has ketones i find i need to give double the amount of insulin to correct high levels, i test and correct 2 hourly until everything is back to normal. Hope you can get through to clinic

Son newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetis.

I find sweets a lot easier to deal with than chocolate! My youngest can't have dairy so tends to be more sweets than chocolate here anyway. She has a chocolate advent calendar which has been ok, really small amounts aren't too bad. I find things like cakes also cause problems for her but i...

Son newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetis.

Tracey, i don't have family around either, i'm a single mum and friends are reluctant to look after her so know how you feel! Do the bdec online course that i did, i found it really useful, it was devised by Bournemouth hospital and is free. http://www.bdec-e-learning.com/ We are trying...

Help - worried about sudden low blood glucose

The cold weather could be contributing to the lower levels, i would reduce by 0.5 units, wait 3 days and see what effect it has.

    high blood sugar

If you're keeping your carbs the same then yes it is probably the cold that is pushing your levels up. My daughters levels often go up into the teens when she is ill. When she was on premixed insulin like you, i wouuld have to increase her doses by 2-3 units and give a couple of units of...

How often do you test on pump?

I get 350 strips a month for my daughter but that took some arguing and hospital interference!! I find when i test her overnight then sometimes the blood pours out and sometimes it just doesn't come out at all. I have noticed that during the day she must have used the 'pads' rather than the...

One giant leap for Riri - used dual wave for 1st time

I got similar results to you when i tried pasta with my daughter last weekend! I bolused up front for everything apart from the pasta and then multiwaved for the pasta over 4 hours, hypo after 90mins, then good stable levels until about 1am when she had shot up to 13 and stayed at that the rest...

    Back up regime

We're very lucky to have been given a back up pump! It stays at home though and we carry a novorapid pen around with us everywhere we go. I still have a few cartridges from her pens in the fridge so don't need to ask for anymore yet but the hospital did ask the GP to prescribe them if we need them.

Son newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetis.

My daughters levels are up and down as well, **** hormones i reckon!! I dread Christmas every year now, it is stressful enough without adding this into the mix. I end up making her test and correct every 2 hours to handle the effects of chocolate and the higher amount of carbs. Good luck at...

Son newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetis.

I was the same, dreaded the 1st christmas!! I've never bought diabetic chocolate for my daughter: 1 - it still contains carbs and it is the total carbs that count not just the sugar content and 2 - eating a lot of sweetners will cause an upset tummy. I let my daughter have whatever she wants at...

Son newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetis.

Hi Tracey My daughter was diagnosed 3 years ago aged 9. Our hospital won't provide carb counting training or info for children or parents or carers! I taught myself usi8ng an online course called bdec which i found really helpful.

Possible move to Beccles area in Suffolk

Hi, i live in Suffolk but about 20 miles south of Beccles. As my daughter is a child i don't know what adult care is like! We are under Ipswich hospital which would be too far for Beccles which would be likely to be Lowestoft or Norwich hospital but i have no idea what they are like i'm afraid.
