Can you estimate your HbA1c from finger prick readings?

No, not really. I had gestational diabetes and played this torture game with myself whilst waiting for my postpartum hba1c. Thing is, it’s an average. It’s no use using your 9 & 10’s to calculate it and assume prediabetes/diabetes, because you could hit that 10 and he on a rapid decline within...

GD Should I speak to my midwife

I would try and contact them today and I’m the meantime ask this question on the Gestational Diabetes Facebook group as there is lots of advice re diet on there.

Type 2 Measuring a meal: my first time

Non diabetic numbers there. Seems you tolerated it well

    Erythritol

I’ve used it successfully before when I made a banana bread, but I used a larger quantity a month or so ago to make a mug brownie and I felt TERRIBLE afterwards. Nausea, dizziness, just vile. I read that it is the most tolerated sweetener generally but those who did suffer from it suffered in...

    Prediabetes Nightmares and Palpitations.

Absolutely agree low carb is the way to go for diabetics and non diabetics alike. The ketogenic diet is not the only way to do this though. If it works for you then that’s great of course! :)

    Prediabetes Nightmares and Palpitations.

It’s a harsh lifestyle to adapt to, and it’s not necessary to be that strict to reduce glucose levels from the prediabetic range. I also don’t believe it’s sustainable long term for the majority.

    Prediabetes Nightmares and Palpitations.

Most on keto take electrolytes for that reason. Honestly, keto is quite harsh and not necessarily needed. A low carb diet can work for you just as well and is more sustainable I’d say.

    New to this

Not necessarily T2 but if you’re symptomatic it’s definitely worth investigating.

    Prediabetes BG spike

Or that 10.5 could be 11. All the studies I’ve read show that although meters aren’t 100% accurate with post prandial, the difference between meter & lab with fasting bloods is negligible. Therefore, with an hba1c of 55 and a fasting over 7 as stated above this is almost certainly diabetes.

    “Reversing” prediabetes

Surely there must be a more accurate test. hba1c is easily manipulated / influenced by diet or medical conditions, and an OGTT can be passed by diabetics or failed by non diabetics on a low carb diet. Do you know of any tests to measure actual insulin resistance? Surely a specialist could...

    Prediabetes BG spike

I was under the impression that a single hba1c in the diabetic range was enough to diagnose however a follow up for confirmation was usually performed shortly after especially if there are no symptoms present. I would say you are diabetic and should steer clear of the puddings you mentioned. A...

    “Reversing” prediabetes

because I see people saying their Hba1c is now in the prediabetic range but it’s “ok because it’s not full blown T2 and is reversible” - I don’t really see any difference between the two anymore. The confusion for me is that I’ve read (and I can’t remember where) that by following a low carb...

    “Reversing” prediabetes

I don’t understand this at all. Doctors will say you can “reverse” prediabetes, but not T2. Once prediabetic, doesn’t that mean your body has reached a point where it simply does not function in the way it did before, and that will be the case forever - however it can be managed with diet. If...

    Unofficially official?

I thought as much. I tested my boyfriend after a Red Bull and he hit 8.3. It seems there’s still a lot of unknowns when it comes to non diabetic glucose.

    Unofficially official?

Well, I guess because you said he’s definitely not diabetic I thought he may have already had tests. Many medics argue that a non prediabetic/diabetic would never see a number as high as 10 although I don’t believe it at all.

    Unofficially official?

That’s interesting. Has he ever had bloods done to rule out prediabetes etc?

    Unofficially official?

If you’ve had GD you should be having annual hba1c’s. Have you? If so; what were they? After my baby I spiked to 9.5 one hour after a bowl of Pho including rice noodles & rice paper veg spring rolls, but when I re tested 1 min later I was already at 7.2 - it started coming down very fast. Not...

    Sugar in urine

Thirst can be a symptom but many have no symptoms at all. If you’re drinking more because you’re thirsty for it, possibly. Blood test is the right way to go.

    Latest hb1c

I am realising that now. I believe this 7.8 that is quoted everywhere stems from the OGTT, which obviously doesn’t take into account factors involved in the breakdown of actual foods with fats etc. It seems stupid to use the same figure for an entirely different dietary intake. Despite this, my...
