    Flavoured Spirits

I have had vodka & coke, rum & coke, jack daniels & coke, WKD (vodka and fruit) and all premixed drinks in cans. The alcohol balanced out the sugar content of the coke, but I always have 1 part alcohol and 4 parts soft drink. My DSN and some accredited sources said that alcohol works in a...

What do you eat to get out of hypos and to stay level

Jelly babies make me want to throw up after eating 1 or 2, might be a reaction, anyway, if I don't have glucose tablets handy I eat 2 or 3 chocolate bars, even though they are slow acting, I feel more normal when I have a hypo than having high blood sugar or even normal blood sugar.

    Arrested for drunk and disorderly

This sounds like a scenario that I could imagine if I was very poor at organising myself and attitude towards others, but luckily I know better. I assume the OP was talking about the old measurement of blood sugar explaining the need for glucose when being held by the police. It also sounds to...

How old were you when you were diagnosed?

Diagnosed with Type 1 at age 20, half way through college but still achieved top grades in second year which proved I was in control that year!

    addicted!

Ever since I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes I have been drinking nothing else but diet coke, pepsi max, coke zero, mixed drinks (e.g. vodka & coke). Water literally makes me sick, even at the thought of drinking it. But one good thing I have discovered is when I eat some chopped up pieces of...

Did any of you type 1s have a virus before you got diabetes?

Re: Did any of you type 1s have a virus before you got diabe I didn't have any sort of flu, can't remember when but i'm pretty sure diabetes is caused by part of chromosome pair #6 where I think is enough evidence to call it a cause for diabetes because some disease with your urine turning...

    Hypo symptoms

Pretty sure that you feel cold if your blood sugar is too high, in my experience it always feels cold when actually the room I am in at that time is actually room temperature so I tested and said I was high. Is this what you are feeling? if not disregard this completely.

What do you least like about diabetes?

I like to think that in the future there will be a method of drinking insulin to allow it to absorb in the bloodstream, for instance in milkshakes or dissolvable tablets to be put in water or fizzy drinks (diet of course). Do you think things like this have been considered or being researched as...

    Retinopathy can get anyone !!

For me, it's hard to see what I eat could be harmful to me in the long run which could in turn contribute to a more severe case of retinopathy. I missed an eye screening appointment but I will book another to make sure that my eyes are as healthy as can be. I think I have a minor case of damage...

Change from NPH to Lantus insulin

I take lantus, but everyones resistance is different, but i'll say it anyway, you are giving yourself alot of insulin, I only inject 12-14 units every midnight (my awkward sleeping pattern), i'm not advising you take the same amount of insulin as I am, as I said the insulin resistance varies on...

Would you prefer to be on insulin injections or on a pump?

Re: Would you prefer to be on insulin injections or on a pum I have an average HBA1C of 18%, however I have not been recommended nor a mention of it from my GP or diabetic specialists.

Type 1: What are your HbA1c test results?

Not sure whether I should be shocked, my most recent one was 29.3, doctor referred me to diabetic specalist, had one last year because I only had type 1 diabetes for just over a year now and they said I could get blind (diabetic retinopathy) from having my blood sugars between 16 and 40...

Type 1: What are your HbA1c test results?

Got my results for my 2nd HBA1c and told the limit was under 11, my results told me it was 17.9%, it was high, but you can't really blame me for thinking it was a hypo on a hot summer/autumn day in turn eating a massive amount of food increasing my blood sugars by 10 mmol/l at least and an hour...

Big reduction in insulin today - why I wonder??

Heat and stress. This is what causes my blood sugar to lower and has done so for the past few days when I didn't need insulin at all, apart from my daily Lantus per night.

Stopped taking insulin - blood sugars fine. Advice!!

Whatever you do (for T1) keep injecting your slow/long acting insulin (Lantus) every night/day otherwise you will find yourself in a difficult situation and will be in need of emergency care and probably find yourself in the severe situation in hospital under monitoring to get back to normal.

Stopped taking insulin - blood sugars fine. Advice!!

I'm a type 1 and I had a little experiment, so blame me for being so experimental with things its just in my nature, only taking Lantus for the 3 days (9 units per night) and I had 2 courses of food each day (lunch and tea), they weren't really high in carbohydrates so I didn't take any...

    Every Day Bag

If I am going out e.g. going college for just 3-5 hours, I wouldn't take anything if it is in the afternoon (12 - 4pm) since I would have ate at home beforehand, I would have money to buy any sugary food while studying etc and I know what my blood sugar is because I am used to what kind of state...

    Injection sites

I never had a problem with this 'lantus mixing with novorapid' there have been many times that I have used lantus straight after a novorapid injection before I go bed, if my blood sugar is above 9.5 mmol/l. For some odd reason, injecting lantus on the left (my left) of my abdomen, I get a...

    Injection sites

Possibly, I have no problems with any high sugars overnight, but I have always injected in the abdomen area and on my waist area. Any area that is fat enough for me to inject into and since i'm severely underweight the only places I can inject are the areas I just mentioned. Also heard that if I...

Will there ever be a cure?

If there ever is a cure, I think I will turn down the offer because it has given me so much, things are so much clearer when in full control and having good blood glucose readings not to forget that I have gained some weight in the time I had it, my theory is I think non-diabetics wouldn't see...
